Playground
My Ugly Clementine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yeah, ′cause we share a friend
Doesn't mean your values fit the way I am
Just because I have smaller hands
Doesn′t mean I can't do what my male friends can

I see that you, you are taller than me
But it's not true that I′m smaller than you
The work I do runs on passion
And that′s a surposter qualification

Don't get me wrong
I do respect everything that you′ve done
But I do feel that this isn't the everway round
And that I don′t understand
Just 'cause my playground wasn′t surrounded my men

Yeah, 'cause we share a friend
Doesn't mean your values fit the way I am
Just because I have smaller hands
Doesn′t mean I can′t do what my male friends can

We never can someone like you
It's just, we′re back in time
How I wish I said it to you
I'm too nice ′cause I believe in the good
But sometimes I wish I could act just like you

Yeah, 'cause we share a friend
Doesn′t mean your values fit the way I am
Just because I have smaller hands
Doesn't mean I can't do what my male friends can

Yeah, ′cause we share a friend
Doesn′t mean your values fit the way I am
Just because I have smaller hands
Doesn't mean I can′t do what my male friends can

Can, can, can

Can, can, can

Can, can, can

Can, can, can

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Playground" by My Ugly Clementine speak about breaking gender stereotypes and challenging the societal norms that confine women to certain roles and limit their potential. The singer challenges the belief that just because she is a woman with smaller hands, she cannot do what her male friends can. She asserts that the work she does runs on passion and that passion should be considered a valid qualification. The singer also talks about the pressure to conform to gender roles and the difficulties of being a woman in a male-dominated society. She mentions how her playground, metaphorically representing her life, was not surrounded by men and how she sometimes wishes she could act like men and be more aggressive.

The song points out the issues of discrimination, gender expectations, and double standards. The singer emphasizes that just because she is a woman, it does not mean she is weaker or a lesser individual. She wishes she could speak her mind and not confine herself to societal expectations of being a 'nice' woman.

Il listened to this whole record on spotify... a few times. One of the best things i've heard this year, if not the best. This song in particular is pop/rock/indie perfection. And the peeled version is awesome too. There are a few live shows available on youtube and it's amazing to see that all members of the band can really sing. Hope to see you live in belgium some day.
