Overall Meaning

The song “What You Want” by N.I.C. is a confident and swaggering track that speaks to the rap game’s materialistic side. The song is driven by a catchy chorus that asks “What you want?” and repeats the phrase “What you faking for?” The verses are filled with braggadocio, with N.I.C. and Freeway (of Roc-A-Fella fame) boasting about their success, their rap skills, and their ability to get with attractive women. The song explores themes common to hip hop: money, power, respect, and the desire to be the best.

The lyrics in “What You Want” speak to the idea that success in the rap game is closely tied to wealth and material possessions. The chorus touches on the idea that people fake the appearance of success to fit in with the lavish and materialistic lifestyle associated with rap culture. The verses paint a picture of a luxurious lifestyle filled with women, nice cars, and big houses, while also acknowledging the struggle it takes to get to that point.

Overall, “What You Want” is a song that showcases N.I.C.’s lyrical ability while also speaking to the materialistic nature of rap culture. The song suggests that the price of success in the rap game is a willingness to flaunt material possessions and portray an image of success.

Wow - this song brings back so many good memories. I was a resident at a club in LA called Circus (where Spundae/RED/LMD hosted events). Played this there so much. I can head the crowd cheering in my head as I listen to this. Surreal.
