The group were initially known as Pledis Boys, after their unofficial promotions with their seniors, Son Dambi and After School for their Happy Pledis 2012 “Love Letter” single. They also appeared on stage with them promoting the song "Love Letter". They made an unofficial first appearance on 29 December 2011 at the 2011 SBS Gayo Daejun, performing the 'shuffle' dance with labelmates After School. They made their first CF with After School's Lizzy.
On January 16, 2012, Pledis Entertainment revealed NU'EST's leader, JR. The next day they revealed two new members, Minhyun and Aron. And on January 19, they finally introduced the entire group by revealing the identity of their final two members, Baekho and Ren.
The music video for "Face" was released on March 15, 2012. NU'EST made their broadcast debut on the same day on Mnet's M! Countdown where they performed "I'm Sorry", a b-side track from their debut single album, and the title track "Face".
On July 9, 2014, NU'EST released their first full album, "Re:Birth", with the lead single "Good Bye Bye". They made their Japanese debut on November 5, with the single "Shalala Ring".
JR, Baekho, Minhyun, and Ren participated in the reality television series Produce 101 Season 2 during the first half of 2017. During their appearance on the show, previously released albums, rose on South Korean album charts, reflecting a sudden surge in popularity of the group. After the final episode of Produce aired, NU'EST's previous releases shot back up on music charts and topped the Gaon Chart. Minhyun ranked within the top 11, earning a position in the temporary boy group Wanna One, and he promoted exclusively with them for 1.5 years. The remaining members announced they would be promoting as NU'EST W until Minhyun's return. Due to the group's sudden surge in popularity, they (as NU'EST W) returned to music shows to promote their single "Hello" (first released in 2013), and ranked number 11 on Inkigayo.
On April 19, 2021, the group released their second studio album, "Romanticize", with the lead single "Inside Out". The album topped Hanteo's weekly album sales chart and earned two crowns on the Gaon Music Chart. The lead single also went on to score wins on M! Countdown, Music Bank, Show! Music Core, and Inkigayo, earning the group its second music show grand slam since their single "Love Me" in 2019. Following the success of their second album, the group spent the rest of 2021 mostly working on their solo projects.
On February, 28, 2022, it was announced that the group's exclusive contract with Pledis Entertainment will end on March 14. It was also announced that members Aron, JR and Ren will leave the agency at the conclusion of their contract, while Baekho and Minhyun opted to renew. With the news of their contract expiring, the group confirmed their disbandment through handwritten letters to their fans, announcing their decision to pursue individual projects. A final compilation album, "Needle & Bubble", was released on March 15 to mark the group's 10-year anniversary before officially disbanding, with the new song "Again" ("다시, 봄) as the title track.

내게 더 가까이 지금 on my mind
Love, love, love me, uh
Love me, love me, love me, love me
Love, love, love me, uh
Love, love, love me, uh
Love me, love me, love me, love me
Love, love, love me, uh
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
멈추지 마 너와 난 make it right
Yeah, yeah, yeah
내게 더 가까이 지금 on my mind

The lyrics of NU'EST's song "LOVE ME" express a strong desire for connection and intimacy. The song begins with the lines "I can feel you even if you don't say it / You don't have to use difficult words," suggesting that the singer is attuned to the unspoken emotions and thoughts of their loved one. The lyrics go on to describe the potential for a magical connection if the loved one is willing to open up and reveal their innermost secrets and desires.
The chorus of the song is an impassioned plea for love and acceptance, with the repeated refrain "Love me, love me, love me, uh" expressing the singer's intense desire for emotional connection. The bridge section of the song features the lines "Before we're perfect, we're most vulnerable / Don't stop, you and I will make it right," indicating that the singer is willing to take risks and be vulnerable in the pursuit of love.

For newer fans who only know NU’EST as brooding, dark, mature, and serious, “Love Me” is a stark change of pace. But for longtime fans, the deep house track is a satisfying return to the whimsical, romantic side of NU’EST that the group displayed in past title tracks like “Sleep Talking” and “Love Paint.”
The song’s lyrics, which Baekho and JR helped write, are about taking a risk and diving in deeper to a relationship to unlock its possibilities. But this message could also apply to NU’EST themselves. The group put themselves out there, daring to express their shortcomings and failures on a TV program in order to get another chance:
Miracles can happen when we uncover
Your deepest secrets and your wishes
Get close to me now, on my mind
I just want to dance with you
On this empty street
Just be brave
Hold my hand, express yourself
If you want to find another side of yourself
The first few seconds of the video immediately establish a clear vision for the world of NU’EST that rapper JR literally holds in his fingertips. Rather than the suits and chains of their last few comebacks, they’re cozied up in sweaters in warm autumn earth tones and sipping hot drinks topped with cute cat-shaped foam.
