Someone
Name Taken Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You said that you can't be someone, when the world's against you
And this place could not be worse, to much that hurts
So much for you to carry

And you made me think everything was wrong,
And everyone except for you
And you just can't see that you're to blame for mistakes that you've made
You can lie all you want, doesn't matter much to me
I'm not like you, anymore
Know there's no one else to blame, further of this I believe
Trying not to make someone else's mistakes

And nothing wakes you up, you'd rather sleep, does life still matter?
Wish that I could get you out of bed, we'd move on,
Forget the things that we both said

You can lie all you want, doesn't matter much to me
I'm not like you, anymore
Know there's no one else to blame, further of this, I believe
Trying not to make someone else's mistakes

And when you have more enemies then friends,
Don't bother, don't bother coming back
You said you could be someone, someone

You can lie all you want, doesn't matter much to me
I'm not like you
You can yell all you want about everything you see
There's not much for me to do, anymore
Know there's no one else to blame, further of this I believe
We're not gonna be the same

So let's turn around and let's say goodbye,

Let's turn around and let's say goodbye
Always so alone, I wish that you'd stay

Overall Meaning

The song "Someone" by Name Taken is a reflection on the struggle that one faces in trying to find their place in the world. The singer addresses someone who is struggling with feeling like they are nobody and that the world is against them. The song acknowledges the heaviness that this person is carrying and how it has affected their outlook on life. However, the song also acknowledges that this person is responsible for some of the mistakes they have made, and that they need to take ownership of their actions. The chorus repeats the phrase, "You can lie all you want, doesn't matter much to me. I'm not like you anymore," indicating that the singer has moved on from this person's negativity and is no longer willing to be pulled down by them. The song continues to explore the theme of moving forward and making your own way in the world, even if that means leaving someone behind.

One interesting fact about this song is that it was featured in the popular video game, Tony Hawk's American Wasteland. Additionally, the band's record label, Drive-Thru Records, went bankrupt shortly after the release of this album, which had a significant impact on the band's access to promotion and support. Despite this setback, the band continued to tour and develop a dedicated fan base.

Another interesting aspect of this song is the use of repetition in the chorus. The phrase "I'm not like you anymore" is repeated three times, which underscores the idea that the singer has moved on from this person and their negative influence. Additionally, the repetition of the phrase "Let's turn around and let's say goodbye" at the end of the song brings the message of moving forward full circle.

The chord progression for "Someone" follows a fairly standard pop-punk structure, with power chords and a strong emphasis on the rhythm section. The song begins with a simple, catchy guitar riff and builds to a crescendo in the chorus. The specific chords used in the song may vary depending on the interpretation, but it generally follows the key of D major.

Overall, "Someone" is a powerful, introspective song that reflects on the complicated relationships we have with the people in our lives. The song's message of moving on and taking responsibility for your own actions is both empowering and thought-provoking, making it a standout track in Name Taken's discography.

Chords: D, A, Bm, G, F#m, Em

Anthony Torres

there's a (demo) of it released on "the stupid chad ep" their first mix of songs ever and distributed entirely by them in 2001 i think. then it was released on the warped tour 2002 compilation, OBVIOUSLY so much better and clean sounding, but nothing compares to Brets beats on that beautiful ep

Michael Schmitt

miss this band so much.

Chase

It is on their unreleased 'Hold Your Breath, You Know How Long' album. It's on the internet somewhere. Pretty great album, just really low quality!
