All By Myself
Nancy Sinatra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
What'll I do?
I long for somebody who
Will sympathize with me
I'm growing so tired of living alone
I lie awake all night and cry
Nobody loves me, that's why
All by myself in the morning
All by myself in the night
I sit alone in a cosy Morris chair
So unhappy there
Playing solitaire
All by myself I get lonely
Watching the clock on the shelf
I'd love to rest my weary head on somebody's shoulder
I hate to grow older
All by myself
My name and number
Are in the book
The one that hangs on a hook
In almost ev'ry drug store
Why don't someone bother to look?
My central tells me all day long
"Sorry, the number is wrong"
In Nancy Sinatra's song "All by Myself", she expresses her loneliness and longing for companionship. The lyrics suggest that she has been living alone for some time and is growing tired of it. She yearns for someone who will sympathize with her and love her, as she feels unloved and unwanted. She spends her days sitting in a Morris chair, playing solitaire, and watching the clock on the shelf. Despite her name and number being listed in the phone book, she doesn't hear from anyone, and her calls are always met with disappointment. The song's refrain repeats the line "all by myself" as an echoing reminder of the singer's solitary state.
The song's lyrics evoke deep emotions of sadness, despair, and isolation that many people can relate to. The loneliness is further emphasized by the slow, melancholic melody that fits the theme of the song perfectly. Nancy Sinatra's delivery is emotional and heartfelt, making the song an incredibly moving experience.
