Sugar Town
Nancy Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I got some troubles, but they won't last
I'm gonna lay right down here in the grass
And pretty soon all my troubles will pass
'Cause I'm in shoo-shoo-shoo, shoo-shoo-shoo
Shoo-shoo, shoo-shoo, shoo-shoo Sugar Town

I never had a dog that liked me some
Never had a friend or wanted one
So I just lay back and laugh at the sun
'Cause I'm in shoo-shoo-shoo, shoo-shoo-shoo
Shoo-shoo, shoo-shoo, shoo-shoo Sugar Town

Yesterday it rained in Tennessee
I heard it also rained in Tallahassee
But not a drop fell on little old me
'Cause I was in shoo-shoo-shoo, shoo-shoo-shoo
Shoo-shoo, shoo-shoo, shoo-shoo Sugar Town

If I had a million dollars or ten
I'd give to ya, world, and then
You'd go away and let me spend

My life in shoo-shoo-shoo, shoo-shoo-shoo
Shoo-shoo, shoo-shoo, shoo-shoo Sugar Town

Overall Meaning

Nancy Sinatra's song "Sugar Town" has an upbeat tune and whimsical lyrics that suggest a carefree attitude towards life's challenges. The opening lyrics "I got some troubles, but they won't last" indicates that the singer is experiencing some problems but believes they will pass with time. The reference to laying in the grass suggests a desire to escape and relax, which is further emphasized in the chorus "Cause I'm in shoo-shoo-shoo Sugar Town".

The second verse "I never had a dog that liked me some, Never had a friend or wanted one, So I just lay back and laugh at the sun" highlights loneliness and a lack of human connection, but the singer seems content in their solitude. The third verse "Yesterday it rained in Tennessee, I heard it also rained in Tallahassee, But not a drop fell on little old me" plays with the idea that the singer is immune to the problems of the world around them.

The final verse "If I had a million dollars or ten, I'd give to ya, world, and then, You'd go away and let me spend, My life in shoo-shoo-shoo Sugar Town" suggests that the singer would rather be left alone in their imaginary Sugar Town, where everything is sweet, rather than face reality. Overall, the lyrics in "Sugar Town" portray a desire to escape from life's challenges and live in a more carefree and idyllic world.

I was seven years old when this song was released and I absolutely loved it. Forty-two years later it brings back very happy memories of hot sunny days and blindingly bright skies here in Australia.

Sorry, dear reader- I've said it before- but I just can't get enough of this song. Thank you, Better Call Saul for brining this gem into my life. ❤🍻

First time hearing this song was from the TV Series "Better Call Saul." That's what brings me here. I'm 62 years old and never heard it before but hearing it now I instantly knew of it's simplicity and greatness. Youngsters these days have nothing like this, unfortunately.
