(Paul Francis Webster/Johnny Alfred Mandel)
The shadow of your smile
When you are gone
That lights the dawn
Look into my eyes oh my love and you will see
All the lovely things that you are to me
Our wistful little star
Was far too high
A teardrop kissed your lips
And so did I
Now when I remember spring
And all the joys that love can bring
That's when I will be remembering
The shadow of your smile
A wistful little star
Was far too high
A teardrop kissed your lips girl
And so did I
Now when I remember spring
All the joys that your love can bring
I would be remembering
The shadow of your smile
Now when I remember spring
And all the lovely joys your love can bring
I would be remembering
The shadow of your smile
The Shadow of Your Smile is a romantic ballad originally composed by Johnny Mandel, with lyrics by Paul Francis Webster. The song was popularized by Nancy Sinatra in 1966 for the film The Sandpiper starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. The song speaks about the power of reminiscing on a lost love and how the memory of that person's smile can still affect your life. The title of the song refers to the idea that the memory or "shadow" of the person's smile still lingers even after they have gone.
The opening verse "The shadow of your smile, when you are gone, will color all my dreams and light the dawn" sets the melancholic tone of the song. It highlights how the loss of the person causes a void in the singer's life, and how the memory or shadow of the person's smile serves as a bittersweet reminder of their love. The chorus "look into my eyes, oh my love, and you will see all the lovely things that you are to me" showcases the depth of the singer's feelings for their love, and how they still see them in every aspect of their life.
The song's lyrics continue with "our wistful little star is far too high, a teardrop kissed your lips, and so did I," which speaks to the fleeting nature of love and how it can be easily lost. However, the memory of that love is still worth holding onto, as seen in the line "that's when I will be remembering the shadow of your smile."
Overall, The Shadow of Your Smile is a poignant and heartfelt ballad that speaks to the power of memory and the lasting impact that love can have on a person's life.
