Here's That Rainy Day
Nancy Wilson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Maybe I should have saved those left over dreams
Funny, but here's that rainy day
Here's that rainy day they told me about
And I laughed at the thought that it might turn out this way

Where is that worn out wish that I threw aside
After it brought my lover near
It's funny how love becomes a cold rainy day
Funny, that rainy day is here

Funny how love becomes a cold rainy day
Funny, that rainy day is here

Overall Meaning

The song "Here's That Rainy Day" by Nancy Wilson is a melancholic ballad that reflects the feeling of heartbreak and the realization that the romantic dreams we cherish may never truly come to fruition. The lyrics suggest that the singer, in hindsight, regrets not holding on to the "leftover dreams" that they once had. The mood of the song is set by the soft piano accompaniment, with the singer's voice taking on a mournful tone. The use of the word "funny" throughout the song adds to its irony and sarcasm, implying that though it is raining, the world is not always so naturally predictable.

In the second verse, the singer wonders where the "worn out wish" that brought their lover close has gone. This line refers to the fact that love and relationships can be unpredictable; they might get better or end up becoming a rainy day. The repetition of the line "funny how love becomes a cold rainy day" reinforces this idea, with the "cold rainy day" symbolizing the disappointment or a broken heart that one feels when relationships don't work out.

Overall, "Here's That Rainy Day" is a beautiful song that speaks to the sadness that can arise after love has failed. The lyrics and melody are hauntingly poignant, and Nancy Wilson's interpretation of the song is masterful.

One of America's truly great singers--and OMG that string arrangement!

I had somehow forgotten this once upon time favourite singer of mine, put it down to too much water under the bridge or too many years on life's highway, so it was a great pleasure to rediscover Miss Wilson's rendition of this truly great standard. What a voice. Memorable indeed.

@vidclickr

I was 14 when my parents chose or received this album through their Capitol Records Club subscription. I wore out this one, like all the Nancy Wilson albums we had. I've never understood why she wasn't better known. A case of the singer's singer, I guess, and a perfectly gorgeous vocalist and musician.

Beautiful...beautiful....beautiful!!! The finest rendition of this great standard!! The great Sid Fellers' string arrangement actually reminds one of rain falling, and brings out the tremendous sadness needed for this song. He brings it! And so does Nancy! Brava!
