Hello Fever
Naomi Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I caught this cold and I like it
In my dreams I hear a sound
Kind of mute, slightly flanged
You took my temperature and frowned

Hello fever, wrap yourself
Around my limbs, around my head
Slow me down, give the world a spin
I won't stay in bed

Raise your eyes, the sky is branded
They put logos on the clouds
It won't keep the trees from whispering
I know what they're on about

So I stopped the infusion
Look, I ripped the needle out
And I know you'll call me naughty
But you'll have your doubts

Oh, I love this levitation
Oh, to be overwhelmed
Elsewhere frauds fool themselves
To remain at the helm

Hello Masters Of The Universe
Are you tired? Are you sick of pretending
To know what you're doing?
Go on, wash your hands

All is quiet, we are listening
For the rumble of the Big One
Some are crushed, some are curious
Some are pondering what they've done

Hello fever, knock me out
It's another kind of awake

Speed me up, send me spiralling
There's lots I can take

Overall Meaning

In "Hello Fever," Naomi describes a feeling of being simultaneously taken over by sickness and liberation. The opening line, "I caught this cold and I like it," is a paradoxical statement that seems to suggest that, despite the discomfort that comes with being ill, there is something enjoyable about the sensation of losing control to the sickness. The dreamlike quality of the sound she hears, which is described as "mute" and "slightly flanged," adds to this sense of floating and being taken away.

As the lyrics progress, Naomi continues to describe the feeling of being taken over, but in a different way. She references the idea of being slowed down by the fever, but does not want to stay in bed. Instead, she wants to be wrapped in the fever and moved through the world with a different kind of energy. She also notes that the branding and commodification of the sky, with logos on the clouds, does not change the fact that nature still holds secrets and whispers.

The final stanza returns to the idea of being overwhelmed, but this time with a sense of defiance. Naomi references those in power, the "Masters Of The Universe," and notes that their power is a facade. She encourages them to "wash their hands" and suggests that they don't know what they're doing. In the end, the fever is embraced as another way of being awake, sending her spiraling and ready to take on whatever comes her way.
