Ball And Chain
Nashville Cast Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I get along without you baby
if I only could
There ain't a thing about you baby
that does me any good
But still you try to keep me here
well is that just your pride
Everyday with you is like a
roller coaster ride

It's so complicated
it's driving me insane
It's just a ball and chain
Just a ball and chain

Listen here

Ain't no doubt about it baby
you push me away
Every time I turn my back
your begging me to stay
Then you leave me hanging on
I don't know where you're at
If I knew you were really gone
Well I could handle that

It's so complicated
it's driving me insane
It's just a ball and chain
Just a ball and chain
Just a ball and chain

I've tried all things I could to
get me off the hook
But still I keep on falling for
every single trick in the book
yeah
All those little games you play babe
used to be fun
Baby we were flying higher
close to the sun
But you're tearing me apart now
All the good is gone
There's a shadow hanging over us
What was right is wrong

It's so complicated, it's driving me insane
It's just a ball and chain
Just a ball and chain

Just a ball and chain

Just a ball and chain
Just a ball and chain

Overall Meaning

In the Nashville Cast's song "Ball and Chain", the singer expresses their complicated relationship with their partner. The song seems to be about a partner who is unreliable, inconsistent, and causes the singer a lot of stress. The vocal performance captures the frustration and emotions of the singer. The lyrics are very straightforward, with the singer acknowledging that there is no benefit to his relationship anymore. He could "get along" without his partner, but the partner's "pride" keeps them together.

The singer uses several metaphors to describe his situation such as a "roller coaster ride," and "ball and chain." He feels trapped in the relationship, but at the same time, he seems to be struggling to sever his connection with his partner. He tried to "get off the hook" but keeps "falling for every single trick in the book." He is aware that the relationship is unsustainable and wants to break free, but his partner constantly keeps him hooked with mixed signals, leaving him "hanging on" and confused. The chorus repeats the phrase "just a ball and chain", driving home the feeling of being trapped and held back by this relationship.

Connie Britton slayed the role of Rayna Jaymes!!!! She should have stayed until the end of the series.

This is one of my favorite scenes out of this show - loved the Luke Wheeler character. I tip my proverbial hat to Will Chase, it's easy to love Deacon - great character, great actor, and so much writing that went in to develop him. Luke on the other hand was just an extended guest, so Will had to sell him with less material and less emotional attachment - and I think Will sold that character PERFECTLY. Made me wish Will Chase was a bonafide country star, I think he would have been great as one.

This TV series is another league when it comes to music, especially when all sang by the actual actors.
