Stardust
Nat Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Steals across the meadows of my heart
High up in the sky the little stars climb
Always reminding me that we're apart
You wander down the lane and far away
Leaving me a song that will not die
Love is now the stardust of yesterday
The music of the years gone by
Sometimes I wonder, I spend
The lonely nights
Dreaming of a song
The melody
Haunts my reverie
And I am once again with you
When our love was new
And each kiss an inspiration
But that was long ago
And now my consolation
Is in the stardust of a song
Beside the garden wall
When stars are bright
You are in my arms
The nightingale
Tells his fairytale
Of paradise, where roses grew
Though I dream in vain
In my heart it will remain
My stardust melody
The memory of love's refrain
In Nat King Cole's song Stardust, the lyrics describe a bittersweet feeling of longing and reminiscing old love that has now turned into stardust. As the purple twilight time sets in, the persona's heart begins to be filled with a sense of loneliness, and although the little stars keep climbing the sky, it only reminds him of how he and his lover are apart. The lover has wandered away, leaving behind a song that will not die, which became a symbol of their love, now turned to stardust, belonging to yesterday. The persona is left dreaming of the song's melody, full of inspiration and new love, but which has become a distant memory. The only consolation he now has is in the stardust of this song that still speaks of a long gone love that he once shared with his lover.
The second verse begins with the persona still longing to be with his lover when stars appear bright beside the garden wall, and he can hold her in his arms. The nightingale's fairytale sings of a paradise where roses grow, and although he dreams of this paradise and their love that has turned to stardust, it remains only in his heart as a memory of love's refrain. The song expresses the beauty and poignant introspection of love that has faded over time but holds tightly to the memories in its melody to remind us of the joy and pain of love.

Dedicated to all those lost loves
I have lamented over so many yearsâŠ
I think of you every time I listen to Stardust Memories
Clearly these words mean a lot
But I want to tell you
My life would have not been the same without you⊠wherever you are
As Jimmy Durante often said walking out the Door
âGoodnight Mrs Calabash , Wherever You Areâ

We were married 40 years ago. She passed away last year. There is great comfort in this song for me.

I am very sorry for your loss....yes, this brings us to tears, but with so much comfort. As one person here said "...like a velvet cloak wrapping the lyrics in a warm embrace".

I get emotional every time I hear this song. My late husband sang it to me on tape when we were pen friends and it became our song when we got married. He's been gone for 21 years and "Stardust" lives on in my heart.
