When I Fall in Love
Nat “king” Cole Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I fall in love, it will be forever
Or I'll never fall in love
In a restless world like this is
Love is ended before it's begun
And too many moonlight kisses
Seem to cool in the warmth of the sun

When I give my heart, it will be completely
Or I'll never give my heart
And the moment I can feel that you feel that way too
Is when I fall in love with you

And the moment I can feel that you feel that way too
Is when I fall in love with you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Nat "King" Cole's song "When I Fall in Love" express the deep and lasting nature of the singer's love. The opening line sets the tone by stating that when the singer falls in love, it will be a permanent feeling. They emphasize the seriousness of their emotions by asserting that they will never fall in love if it is not forever. This reveals a sense of commitment and a desire for enduring love.

The second verse highlights the challenges and complexities of love in a restless and unpredictable world. The singer suggests that it is often difficult for love to flourish and develop fully in such a tumultuous environment. They paint a somewhat melancholic picture by implying that love is often prematurely ended even before it has the chance to begin. The mention of "too many moonlight kisses" cooling under the warmth of the sun symbolizes the fading of passion and romance.

The third verse delves into the singer's approach to giving their heart to someone. They declare that when they give their heart, it will be with complete dedication and loyalty. Again, there is an element of ultimatum here, as they assert that they will never give their heart if they cannot do so wholeheartedly. This showcases their desire for a deep connection and an all-encompassing love.

Finally, the repetition of the phrase "And the moment I can feel that you feel that way too" suggests that the singer is waiting for that special moment when they can sense their love interest reciprocating their deep feelings. This line captures the essence of falling in love, as it is the mutual understanding and shared emotions that truly ignite the singer's affection. The repetition emphasizes the significance of this moment, implying that it is a crucial turning point for the singer's emotions.

Overall, Nat "King" Cole's "When I Fall in Love" expresses a desire for lasting and profound love amidst the challenges of a restless world. It speaks to the singer's commitment, their need for reciprocity, and the transformative power of emotions. The song beautifully captures the universal experience of falling in love and the desire for a love that can withstand the tests of time.

I’m listening to this absolute classic of a gem in 2024. What a truly beautiful magnificent voice Nat King Cole had. I can’t stand most of the music that’s popular today, and I feel my faith restored when I listen to vocals as beautiful as this. I’m 33 years old.

I’m 21 and feel the same way, I love music from the 50s. Back when people all had class and respect for each other. I never fit in with my generation or understood what they consider “fun” and “good”
