Let There Be Love
Nat Kin Cole & George Shearing Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Let there be oysters under the sea
Let there be wind, an occasional rain
Chile con care, sparkling champagne
Let there be birds to sing in the trees
Someone to bless me whenever I sneeze
Let there be cuckoos, a lark and a dove
Let there be cuckoos, a lark and a dove
But first of all, please let there be love
Love, love, let there be love
The lyrics of "Let There Be Love" by Nat King Cole and George Shearing convey a simple but powerful message about the importance of love in our lives. The song starts by acknowledging the existence of two individuals - "you" and "me." After establishing their presence, the lyrics go on to describe various elements of nature and human experience, such as oysters, wind, rain, Chile con carne, and sparkling champagne. Each of these things is pleasant in its own way, but ultimately, they fall short of filling the void that only love can fill. The song ends with a repetition of the line "let there be love," emphasizing that while other things may be nice to have, love is what truly matters.
The lyrics of "Let There Be Love" are deceptively simple, but they carry a profound message. The song suggests that while we may enjoy various pleasures in life, such as good food and drink or beautiful natural scenery, these things alone are not enough to make us truly happy. Instead, it is our connection with others - our ability to love and be loved - that ultimately brings us the greatest joy. Moreover, the song suggests that love is not just something nice to have but rather a fundamental need, without which life feels incomplete.
Overall, "Let There Be Love" can be interpreted as a plea for more love in our world, reminding us of the universal importance of human connection. Its joyful melody and catchy lyrics make it a classic for all time.

As well as being a great singer Nat Cole was also a great pianist too. It would have been the icing on the cake to have these two playing piano together.
