By The River Sainte Marie
Nat King Cole Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I left her by the River Sainte Marie,
We pledged our love until eternity.
Along the pebbl'd pathway from her door
We kissed and then we kissed again
And parted on the shore

The Angelus rang out upon the sea
I saw her kneel and say a prayer for me
When winter's gone and spring is on

I'll meet her by the River Sainte Marie

Overall Meaning

Nat King Cole's "By the River St. Marie" speaks of a love that is pure, enduring and hopeful. The song similarly depicts the essence of separation and the journey of renewing a long-lost love. The singer left his lover by the St. Marie River, and they pledged their love for eternity. The lyrics indicate that their parting was an emotional moment with kisses and precious memories shared at the riverbank. The Angelus bells rang out upon the sea as they parted, and the singer saw his love praying for him as he left.

The latter part of the song shares a hopeful message of a future reunion with the line, "When winter's gone and spring is on, I'll meet her by the River Saint Marie." The singer is eager to be reunited with his love and is holding onto the hope of their reunion in the spring. This love story is one of nostalgia, separation, hope, and reunification.

Various sites which print out the lyrics to this song write "angel wings reached out across the sea," and that may be how the lyrics appear in the original sheet music - but in all of the vocal versions I've heard - King Cole Trio (two versions), Stan Kenton, Frankie Laine, Sy Oliver etc., the lyric is clearly "The ANGELUS rang out upon the sea."
