Nat King Cole Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Merry Christmas baby, you sure did treat me nice
Ooh, merry Christmas baby, sure you did treat me nice
Gave me that love for Christmas
Now I'm living in paradise

Now I'm feelin' mighty fine, got good music on my radio
Well, I'm feelin' mighty fine, I got all that good music on my radio
I wanna kiss you baby
While you're standing 'neath the mistletoe

Well, I'm feelin' mighty fine, I got good music on my radio
Well I'm feelin' mighty fine, we got all that good music on my radio
Well, I wanna kiss you, Bonnie
While I'm standing here 'neath the mistletoe

Saintee came down the chimney
About half past three
Left these pretty presents
That you see before me
Ooh, Merry Christmas pretty baby
Sure your show been good to me
I haven't had a drink this morning
I'm all lit up

Ooh, baby, I'm all lit up
I'm all lit up, ooh, like a Christmas tree

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Nat King Cole's "Merry Christmas" celebrate a love that is new, exciting and passionate. The first verse can be interpreted as a thankful response from the singer to Christmas gifts of love received from his romantic partner. He addresses his partner directly, calling her "baby" and exclaiming that she "sure did treat me nice." The use of the past tense in these lines indicates that the celebration is happening after the holiday has passed. The singer is grateful and excited about the love he received as a gift and declares that he is now "living in paradise." The paradise he speaks of is most likely a metaphor for a state of happiness he is experiencing in his relationship. The second verse continues in a similar romantic spirit, with the singer declaring his joy for the good music on his radio. He expresses his desire to kiss his lover under the mistletoe, symbolizing a desire for physical affection.

The third verse describes the entrance of Santa Claus, referred to as "Saintee," as he delivers gifts down the chimney. The singer is surprised and delighted to see that his lover has prearranged beautiful gifts for him. After receiving these gifts, he exclaims, "Sure your show been good to me," indicating that his partner has provided him with everything he needs to be happy. The final two lines of the song present a simile, comparing the singer's alcohol-induced high to the lights on a Christmas tree.

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire
Jack Frost nipping at your nose
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir
And folks dressed up like Eskimos
Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe
Help to make the season bright
Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow
Will find it hard to sleep tonight
They know that Santa's on his way

He's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh
And every mother's child is gonna spy
To see if reindeers really know how to fly

And so I'm offering this simple phrase
To kids from one to ninety-two
Although it's been said many times, many ways
Merry Christmas to you

And so I'm offering this simple phrase
To kids from one to ninety-two
Although it's been said many times, many ways
Merry Christmas to you

I send prayers that the treatments works. Allow yourself to live experiences that you never dared to live before, and don't let fear take on you (sounds silly, but anti-anxiety herb tea like passiflora-valerian really helped me when I was diagnosed with kidney cancer). Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones!!

@baryntn41

And to you. And don't forget the reason for Christmas - the incarnation of God.
