White Christmas
Nat King Cole Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten and children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
"May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten and children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write

May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white

Overall Meaning

The song "White Christmas" by Nat King Cole is a classic Christmas carol that encapsulates the joy and nostalgia of the holiday season. The song is about dreaming of a white Christmas, which refers to the traditional idea of a snowy Christmas with carolers, bright lights, and warmth from the hearth. The lyrics evoke the feeling of longing for a simpler time when Christmas was filled with family, friends, and the magic of the season.

The first verse talks about the singer's desire to experience a traditional Christmas with snow, glistening trees, and children listening for the sound of sleigh bells. The second verse reveals that the singer is writing Christmas cards and wishing that the recipient's Christmas is as merry and bright as the one they are dreaming of. The third verse repeats the sentiment of the first, with a focus on the treetops glistening and the children listening.

The song is a testament to the enduring popularity of traditional Christmas imagery and the significance of the holiday season. The lyrics transport listeners to a time when Christmas was magical and filled with cheer, which is a universal sentiment that is as relevant today as it was when the song was written.

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire
Jack Frost nipping at your nose
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir
And folks dressed up like Eskimos
Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe
Help to make the season bright
Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow
Will find it hard to sleep tonight
They know that Santa's on his way

He's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh
And every mother's child is gonna spy
To see if reindeers really know how to fly

And so I'm offering this simple phrase
To kids from one to ninety-two
Although it's been said many times, many ways
Merry Christmas to you

To kids from one to ninety-two
Although it's been said many times, many ways

I send prayers that the treatments works. Allow yourself to live experiences that you never dared to live before, and don't let fear take on you (sounds silly, but anti-anxiety herb tea like passiflora-valerian really helped me when I was diagnosed with kidney cancer). Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones!!

And to you. And don't forget the reason for Christmas - the incarnation of God.
