Daddy vs. Cancer
Nate Kenyon Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The song Daddy Vs. Cancer talks about the experience of a family whose father has been diagnosed with cancer. The father is portrayed as a hero figure, strong and invincible like Thor, and the family sees themselves as his sidekicks, ready to support him and fight alongside him. The children draw inspiration from comic books they read every night, imagining a world where good always triumphs over evil. They believe that their father will beat cancer just like the heroes in the cartoon shows they watch on TV.
Throughout the song, there is a sense of hope and optimism that is shattered when the father eventually succumbs to cancer. The bridge of the song references Batman, a superhero known for his resilience and ability to overcome any obstacle. However, even the mighty Batman can't always win, and the same is true for the father in this song. The chorus in the second half of the song takes on a darker tone, as the reality of the situation sinks in and the children come to terms with the fact that their beloved father is no longer with them. The hopeful, innocent tone of the first chorus is replaced by a sense of disappointment and loss.
Overall, the song is a powerful tribute to a father who fought a brave battle against cancer but ultimately lost. It captures the feelings of a family faced with such a devastating disease, and the impact it has on their lives.
