Someone
Nectr Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Face the moment here with grace,
Feel and let it fade away,
I won't lay down waiting,
To see you turn away,
Ohh so.

So I call your name,
Knowing you're here for something,
Oh I fall away,
Tell me I'm not just someone, someone,
Tell me I'm not just someone, someone.

Take a moment with your gaze,
And see how we've become so strange,
I won't stay up with you,
If you only need me there to pull though,
I won't stay.

I'm turning away,
I know you're not only someone,
How could I walk away,
Knowing you're not just someone, someone,
No you're not only someone.

You fill my whole world up,
But that can't be enough - for you,
Is it insanity, believing honesty,
You filled my whole world up,
But I won't stay.

I'm turning away,
I know you're not only someone,
How could I walk away,

Tell me I'm not just someone, someone,
Tell me I'm not just someone, someone.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Nectr’s “Someone” seem to describe a person wrestling with their emotions and the depth of their relationship with someone else. In the first verse, the singer acknowledges that they are facing a pivotal moment with grace, but they also realize that the situation will eventually fade away. They refuse to wait around for someone who may turn away from them, however. The chorus then reveals that the singer has called on this person – and it’s clear that they hope that this person is around for something more than just short-lived interactions. They plead with this person not to view them as “just someone” which suggests that they feel insecure about the connection.

The second verse expands on this sense of uncertainty. The person addresses their companion directly and requests that they take a moment to see how much they’ve changed. The singer is choosing to be strong and not just stay there for the other person when they need them. The lyrics imply that the singer is beginning to see that this is not a healthy relationship, and they are considering walking away. There is an acknowledgment that the other person occupies their entire world, but they still need something more. In the final chorus, the singer still struggles with insecurity, but they’ve finally made a decisive choice. They won’t stay with the other person if they’re just going to be viewed as “just someone.”

This song is truly captivating, I hang on every note and inflection in her voice. To me the lyrics are subtle and deep in how it plays on a single notion. I am lost in it.
