Ned Doheny is a singer and songwriter born and raised in Los Angeles.
His grandfather was the same member of the Doheny family that the famous Doheny Drive is named after in that neighbourhood. Ned was born there.
Ned grew up in America where he released one album for Asylum Records entitled 'Ned Doheny' in 1973.
He then relocated to Columbia Records for the album 'Hard Candy' in 1976.
In 1979, he recorded the album 'Prone', again for Columbia, which was imported, originally, as a high priced Japanese import album into the U.K.
The single release, from the album, 'To Prove My Love' was very popular on the U.K. dance scene.
Ned Doheny also wrote songs which were recorded by various artists including Average White Band / Leslie Smith and the Kasu Matsui Project ('Love's A Heartache'), Tata Vega ('Get It Up For Love', made famous by the artist Johnny Rivers) Chaka Khan and Millie Scott ('A Love Of Your Own').
Whatcha Gonna Do For Me?

Just chippin' away
It's all in a day's work
Tryin' hard to defend
The time that I spend alone
The crown that you lose
Exploiting the blues
As hard as it bites
I'm keepin' my sights on you
What cha' gonna do for me
What cha' gonna do for me
What cha' gonna do for me
When the chips are down
In the cool of the night
When nothing seems right
The feeling can take you
Strange as it seems
You make your own dreams come true
If you try to conceal
The way that you feel
You're asking for trouble
Just as sure as I cry
I'm keeping my eye on you
You don't have to tell me
I'm to blame for this
'Cause what you hold against me
Is what I miss
The lyrics to Ned Doheny's song "Whatcha Gonna Do For Me?" seem to be focused on a relationship where there are struggles and sacrifices made to maintain it. The first verse talks about chipping away and defending the time spent alone, which can be seen as a representation of how the singer is working hard to maintain the relationship despite challenges. The second verse talks about making dreams come true and trying to conceal one's emotions, which can be seen as the idea that both people in the relationship are making an effort to stay connected and not let their personal struggles or emotions get in the way. The chorus then asks the question "what cha' gonna do for me?" which is a challenge to the other person in the relationship, suggesting that they need to put in effort too when things get tough.
The lines "The crown that you lose, exploiting the blues, won't get the job done" can be interpreted as a warning to the other person in the relationship. Perhaps they are trying to manipulate the singer or trying to make them feel guilty, but ultimately it won't solve any issues or improve the relationship. The final lines "You don't have to tell me, I'm to blame for this, 'cause what you hold against me is what I miss" suggest that the singer is aware that they have faults in the relationship and that they miss the things that the other person is holding against them. It can be seen as a plea to work together to improve and maintain the relationship.
Overall, the lyrics to "Whatcha Gonna Do For Me?" seem to explore the challenges of relationships and the effort required to maintain them. It's a reminder that both people need to put in effort and work together, even when things get tough.
