Pokémon
Neil Cicierega Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Pokémon is an undeniable obsession with children across the country

So what exactly is a Pokémon? (Pika!)
Cute cuddly characters
Who become super-charged
So they can fight their enemies

It's a Japanese term short for "pocket monster"
Pokemon are incredible creatures
That share the world with humans

It began as a video game from Japan
And has become an international phenomenon
In the form of books, music videos, a tv-show
And trading cards in the hands of school kids all over the world

Well Pokemon has swept the world
Little, reclusive, power-filled monsters
Characters named 'Pikachu', 'Mankey' and 'Snorlax'
School officials are finding that Pokemon cards are responsible for fist-fights
And the Pokemon is creating a monster of a commotion for American kids
They get into fights, but no one dies

Parents should not let their kids
Watch Pokemon
Play Pokemon
Buy Pokemon cards
Have anything to do with Pokemon
Because the message is violence

The genius of Pokémon is you have to keep collecting characters
The game is constantly innovating
And so the epidemic goes from being a craze
To an entire world-order!

Constant trading is not only distracting kids from classwork
But turning the playground into a black market
Where they buy and sell rare cards

The children are developing relationships
with all these Pokemon creatures
Now kids are going jus' wild over this Pokemon
These stuffed animals, collectibles, Pokemon trading cards
Wh-wh-why should they carry these monsters in their pockets?
The entire Pokemon phenomenon is the enemy.
Pokemon-World is a world of the demonic! Of the Satanic!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Neil Cicierega's song "Pokemon" describe the worldwide obsession with Pokemon, a Japanese franchise that began with a video game and has since expanded to books, music videos, a TV show, and trading cards, which has caused many parental concerns as the game promotes violence. The song describes Pokemon as super-charged creatures that can fight their enemies, and how the game and constant trading distract children from their schoolwork, turning the playground into a black market of buying and selling rare cards, and creating a monster of a commotion for American kids. Despite the parental concerns, Pokemon has become an entire world order, and the game constantly innovates to keep the epidemic a craze.

The song is a tongue-in-cheek commentary on the Pokemon craze of the late '90s and early 2000s, as it highlights the controversial aspects of the franchise. Pokemon has always been a hot-button issue with some people who believe it promotes violence and others who argue that it builds relationships with different creatures.

i don’t know if anyone will find this funny but i’m gonna type it out anyway

i’m super high. blizzasted as i like to say. and i haven’t listened to neil cicigiera in about 5 years.

i don’t remember anything about his music.
then i see anthony fantano tweet about neil’s new project, and i decide to look it up on neil’s youtube, remembering that’s where i discovered his content from.

i click on this video and put the phone to my ear (i’m in public) and listen to see if i can remember anything.

i hear a bunch of pleasant sounding voices making some kind of dialogue. i hear some beats. i think to myself, “wow this music is really out there.”

then i look at my phone. a square space ad was playing.

@robinswiththestuds

I remember when this album came out, I thought this song was really funny, but nothing more came to me.

Now as I am older (from me being 14 upon first listening to me now going on 20) , this song really saddens me. I realized that my parents (my dad specifically) were the kind of people that bought into this kind of stuff. I never understood why my dad never let me watch or play pokemon when I was little (around elementary school) and only as I got older did I start to understand.

My parents have always loved me very much, but always had very very strict views on religion (christianity specifically). They always have been very big christians, and more than likely followed the kind of media that was so against things like Pokemon because of its "muh demonic teachings of evolution and unholy monsters". People like my dad were, and really in some ways still is, ignorant to things and fear them because of that. I think that this divide is what has made my relationship with him so complicated. While it might be silly, being held back from something like that as a kid really made me feel left out, and sorta still has effects to this day for me. Not to mention me no longer being religious.

Because of this, I have never played a Pokemon game to completion and really only know things about it from watching others play on Twitch and YouTube. I always assumed it was just a game with a kid on an adventure, but little did I know just how uplifting and encouraging these games are. Everyone around you is really telling you everything that a kid needs to hear. Messages like anything is possible, persistence will always pay off, and that those around you love you are all things that I desperately would have appreciated hearing growing up. But I did not, because PoKeMoN tEaChEs EvOlUtIoN. But now I have grown into an adult, and am very happy now, but had to learn a lot of these lessons through my life in other ways. My parents were (usually) always supportive of me and gave me everything I needed, but really left me hanging in this regard. Pokemon is perfectly tailored for kids, and I am really bummed I missed out on this one.

With all of that being said, I am getting Pokemon Sword for Christmas. Ironically, I am asking my parents for it. I think that they have learned a little about Pokemon and how it is not a bad demonic thing anymore, but still I will feel a little gratified getting it. I am gonna be so excited to play this. I am excited for what is to come.

Tl;Dr I relate to this song and made me realize a lot
(sorry this was a total rant)
