@Greg L The most astounding fact is the knowledge that the atoms that comprise life on Earth, the atoms that make up the human body, are traceable to the crucibles that cooked light elements into heavy elements in their core under extreme temperatures and pressures.

These stars, the high mass ones among them, went unstable in their later years. They collapsed and then exploded, scattering their enriched guts across the galaxy. Guts made of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and all the fundamental ingredients of life itself.

These ingredients become part of gas clouds that condense, collapse, form the next generation of solar systems, stars with orbiting planets. And those planets now have the ingredients for life itself.

So that when I look up at the night sky and I know that yes, we are part of this universe, we are in this universe, but perhaps more important than both of those facts is that the universe is in us. When I reflect on that fact, I look up—many people feel small because they’re small and the universe is big—but I feel big, because my atoms came from those stars. There’s a level of connectivity.

That’s really what you want in life, you want to feel connected, you want to feel relevant, you want to feel like you’re a participant in the goings-on of activities and events around you. That’s precisely what we are, just by being alive.

This is one of the most artistic interpretations I've ever heard about the universe. I listen to this whenever I hit a point of regret, and I remember that we're all here for a greater purpose, and I tear up as if Neil is a voice inside me telling me that things will be alright. So I followed my gut, and I'm pursuing my dream as a musician.

This video has inspired me so much. I first saw this when I was 13 or 14 and it instantly hit me so hard. I watched it so many times after that, I had memorised the whole thing. I could revise the entire quote from memory without even actively having tried that. During this fase I watched Neil deGrasse Tyson's series and even read his book (that was quite difficult for a 14 year old with a different mother language) and wanted to become an astronomer. Sadly I had to give up on that because my math skills are far too poor, but I got into philosophy and fell in love. Now, at 18 I look back on this video and realise that what really got me from this video wasn't the science talk, but obviously the deeper meaning behind his words and the way he talks about life. In the end it was the philosophical message that inspired me so greatly.

Thank you for this video! It actually had a big impact on my life I think :)

Now I am 21 and will get my physics degree soon because of his huge impact on me. it started when he hosted COSMOS . I fell in love and at that moment i decided to major in physics in the future. btw i still struggle in math so don't worry haha

Yes, it is a rare ability to be able to describe such deep subjects so poetically, and clearly enough to allow even lay people to catch a glimmer of what the experts understand - to grasp the basics at least.

And to be able to do so with complete honesty, even when the subject treads on some people's cherished beliefs without sounding confrontational is a feat.

It almost makes me think that, like "journalist", "science communicator" ought to be a college major somewhere. A major combining a broad understanding of science with philosophy, and creative literature.

I have heard detractors ask about what major research Tyson has done, as if that is all that matters. One Tyson has the potential to create a dozen Hawkings, or Krauss's, in his career.

This video is a prime example as to why I will always appreciate the value and power of the internet. Without the World Wide Web, I would not have been able to experience such exquisite beauty and insight. Yes, there are bad aspects to the internet, I’m not naive enough to deny that. But I feel that the internet gives more than it takes. That level of connection Neil was talking about in the video can be felt by anyone with a mere WiFi signal or cellular connection. The internet will always be one of my favorite places to learn about our world and discover new ideas. I am given some sense of that connection because of the 1’s and 0’s that travel across oceans to reach me.

As a young fella, I became a fan of Carl Sagan. My Grandfather was an Engineer and concert Pianist. A brilliant man to say the least. I read many Sagan books passed on to me by my Grandfather and his knowledge he passed on to me was "question everything" and NDT, a student of Sagan, along with a collective of other scientists like Thorne, Cox, and Kaku, kept these questions alive.

around 7 years ago I took a college class on theology and religion. During one of those class sessions my professor showed us this video. I still remember sitting in that dark room, hair standing up on end as the emotions swirled through me. I knew after that class that I needed to find this video and make sure I could watch it again whenever I needed to. The most astounding fact in the universe beyond the fact that anything exists at all, is that it has arranged itself to become self aware. We observe the universe and its wonders; chances are there are billions of other creatures beyond earth that are able to appreciate the universe as well. That to me is the most astounding fact.

If we could see the univers AND the energy moving in (from outside - far enough) it may look like brain cells connected to each others, and this pattern repeat in our own body and also the body we live on (Earth).
I dont know if he is old enough but this universe may also be self-aware of himself.
We say our possibility to think can act on things around us. So I can barely imagine what this universe can produce in term of reaction when he think or dreams like we do.
Some may say the universe is god if you follow my perception, well I dont think so, it may be closer to be the reflection of god when we look at it with our own eyes and the way they works.
(all this being a simple theory, I dont want to sound like I talk facts, its a feeling)

Michael Burkett Everyone has their own idea of what their 'most astounding fact' is. :) For me, it's hard to say what's the most astounding fact, because every single thing -- not even every living being, every single thing that exists (at least within our perception/observation) even the unknown -- the scale of things, the amount, wrath, and beauty of things, how far we think we've come with technology and as a race, but we truly and hardly know anything -- we don't even know what the Milky Way looks like because we're on the inside looking out. Man, I'm all over the place! Lol. I just want to know more! "The more you know, the more you realize you don't know." That quote holds such truth.

Ray Klish I understand that it is somewhat subjective, however in some ways it is measurable to the extent that tracing atoms to the beginnings is less impressive and more arithmetic versus the idea that anything even exists at all; or the fact that atoms have arranged themselves in a manner that have eventually evolved to our consciousness.

Yes, there may be other great ideas, nonetheless I don't think his astounding fact is as impressive as so many others that could be mentioned.

Makes me shiver every time i watch this, this is the information that literally changed the way i veiw life 6years ago. Life has been amazing ever since, yes even more pain, even more suffering, but in the end this helps me push every day. Neil deGrasse Tyson once said "The Earth holds less importance to the Universe than a grain of sand does to a beach, if you think we are significant, you are wrong". I will always remember this.

Im pretty confident that matter can not be created nor destroyed for a reason, the grain of sand may change forms but its essence is contingent upon the universe in my opinion, idk how id go about empirically measuring that yet lol

But I agree the beach would look the same to us. and it would be very difficult to weed out the consequences of one single grain relative to those around it and the the friction it imposes on the waves passing over it.

The first time I watched Cosmos with Carl Sagan and heard him explaining this, it was the closest I'd ever come to a "religious" experience. Never had I felt so connected to the universe. It was intense and nearly brought me to tears. Learning that for the first time just completely blew me away, and hearing Neil explain it like this brings back those feelings.

We lost a truly great man in Carl Sagan, but with Neil deGrasse Tyson, I think we're in good hands.
