From the 1960s to the 1980s, Diamond was one of the more successful pop music performers, scoring a number of hits. As critic William Ruhlmann writes, "as of 2001, he claimed worldwide record sales of 115 million copies, and as of 2002 he was ranked third, behind only Elton John and Barbra Streisand, on the list of the most successful adult contemporary artists in the history of the Billboard chart."[1] As of May 2005 he has sold 120 million records worldwide, including 48 million records in the U.S.[2]
Though his record sales declined somewhat after the 1980s, Diamond continues to tour successfully, and maintains a very loyal following. Diamond's songs have been recorded by a vast array of performers from many different musical genres.
Diamond was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1984, and then in 2000 was given its Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the early part of 2011.
In 2008 Neil Diamond scored his first ever Billboard number one album with "Home Before Dark", the album also became his first studio album to get to number one in the UK.

Lonely sky, lonely looking sky
And bein' lonely
Makes you wonder why
Makes you wonder why
Lonely looking sky
Lonely looking sky
Lonely looking sky
Lonely looking night
Lonely night, lonely looking night
And bein' lonely
Never made it right
Never made it right
Lonely looking night
Lonely looking night
Lonely looking night
Sleep we sleep
For we may dream
While we may
Dream we dream
For we may wake
One more day
One more day
Glory looking day
Glory day, glory looking day
And all it's glory
Told a simple way
Behold it if you may
Glory looking day
Glory looking day
Lonely looking sky
Neil Diamond's song "Lonely Looking Sky," is a poignant depiction of loneliness and how it affects our emotional well-being. The song begins with the description of a lonely-looking sky, and the repetition of the phrase emphasizes its significance in relation to the theme of the song. The singer wonders why the sky appears to be so lonely and reflects on his own feelings of loneliness. Diamond's use of repetition throughout the song adds to the weight of the emotions expressed, highlighting the unrelenting nature of loneliness.
In the second verse, the singer reflects on how being lonely never makes anything right. The use of negative language such as "never" emphasizes the futility and despair that accompany loneliness. The third verse takes a more hopeful tone, encouraging listeners to dream while they can because we may not have many more opportunities to do so. The final verse is a recognition of the glory of life and how it can be viewed as simple.
Overall, "Lonely Looking Sky" is a somber meditation on the human condition, one that recognizes the depth of despair that can come with loneliness, but also the fleeting beauty of life.
