From the 1960s to the 1980s, Diamond was one of the more successful pop music performers, scoring a number of hits. As critic William Ruhlmann writes, "as of 2001, he claimed worldwide record sales of 115 million copies, and as of 2002 he was ranked third, behind only Elton John and Barbra Streisand, on the list of the most successful adult contemporary artists in the history of the Billboard chart."[1] As of May 2005 he has sold 120 million records worldwide, including 48 million records in the U.S.[2]
Though his record sales declined somewhat after the 1980s, Diamond continues to tour successfully, and maintains a very loyal following. Diamond's songs have been recorded by a vast array of performers from many different musical genres.
Diamond was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1984, and then in 2000 was given its Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the early part of 2011.
In 2008 Neil Diamond scored his first ever Billboard number one album with "Home Before Dark", the album also became his first studio album to get to number one in the UK.

They call it summer love
But oh, how it feels
And I don't believe make believe
But I was a lonely boy
And you were a lonely girl
And we're together tonight
Summer love made it right
Summer love
They called it summer love
But some how it's real
Could see by that look in your eyes
That you were a lonely girl
And I was a lonely boy
And when the evening was done
Summer love made us one
I don't believe make believe
But I was a lonely boy
And you were a lonely girl
And when the evening was done
Summer love made us one.
I was a lonely boy
And you were a lonely girl
But we're together tonight
We're together tonight
Summer love
Summer love made us one
The song Summerlove by Neil Diamond is a romantic ballad that celebrates the magic of summer love, which is often fleeting but intense in its passion. The lyrics describe the deep connection between a lonely boy and a lonely girl as they come together for one magical summer night. They both feel a sense of belonging and comfort in each other's company, and the song suggests that their love is not just a passing fancy but something genuine and real.
The chorus repeats the phrase "Summer love" twice, which emphasizes the theme of the song and underscores the significance of this particular romance. The lyrics also express a sense of disbelief in the power of make-believe, which suggests that the singer is hesitant to believe in superficial or shallow emotions. However, the intensity of the feelings between the boy and the girl is undeniable, and the singer acknowledges that summer love has the power to bring people together and create lasting memories.
Overall, Neil Diamond's Summerlove is a classic ode to the power of summer romance and the everlasting memories it can create. It captures the essence of young love and the sense of spontaneity and adventure that often accompanies it.
