Finn is said to have decided to become a musician at the age of 12 and throughout his school years performed in hospitals and prisons, as well as at home gatherings. In 1976 he formed a group known as After Hours with Mark Hough, Geoff Chunn and Alan Brown. The following year, in 1977, Finn was invited to London to join Split Enz, the band formed by his elder brother, Tim Finn. Split Enz broke up in 1984 and Neil Finn formed a new band, Crowded House, with several other Australian and New Zealand musicians.
Crowded House had a string of hits over the next 10 years, releasing four albums and culminating in a concert in the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House. Finn went solo after this, releasing several albums as well as two albums with his brother Tim (Finn Brothers).
In 2007, Finn re-united Crowded House and released a new album, Time on Earth, and the band began a world tour. In 2010, another new album, "Intriguer", was released and coincided with another world tour.
In 2012, Finn recorded the track "Song of the Lonely Mountain", which was featured in the end credits of the movie "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey".
Dream Date
Neil Finn Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Wherever you are you don't have to step
Old and wise lions eyes
I wish you were here to give me advice
Lightweight, dream date
Fly or fall, it's your call
A weekend retreat, brave and young
The bells have rung, they're playing the tune
I'm tapping my feet
Lightweight, dream date
Fly or fall, it's my call
The opening line of Neil Finn's song Dream Date makes it very clear – the song is all about letting go of the past and moving on. Finn urges his listeners to remove themselves from the past, and he assures them that they don't have to keep revisiting old memories. The lyrics suggest a sense of hopefulness and anticipation for the future, even if it's uncertain.
The lines "Old and wise lions eyes, I wish you were here to give me advice" suggest a longing for guidance from someone who is older and wiser. Perhaps Finn is talking about a mentor or someone he looks up to, who can provide valuable advice as he navigates through life. The rest of the song seems to be about enjoying the present moment and embracing possibilities for the future. "Lightweight, dream date, fly or fall, it's your call" is a reminder that we all have agency over our lives and can take risks or play it safe, depending on our own personal goals.
Overall, Dream Date is a cheerful and optimistic song that encourages listeners to leave the past behind and envision a brighter future.
