i! Thank you for purchasing the audiobook of "How to Ruin Your Life, for Fun and Profit",
As read by the author, Neil Hilborn.

So, you wanna be unhappy?
You probably think that you need to be in pain to be an interesting person - and you're right!
People who "care" about you will tell you that you don't need to suffer to be important,
But just remember, musicians are always most popular the day after they die!
So, are you ready to matter to someone?

Step One
Hate yourself.
You are, presumably, a human being between the ages of alive and dead,
So the chances are you're already there!
Congratulations!

Step Two
Fall in love.
People will tell you that this takes years,
But we have a secret method that will allow you to fall for anyone in under a week:
The trick is, you must be completely unable to tell the difference between love and codependence!

Step Three
Fall in love again.
People will tell you that this is impossible, given the love already inside you,
But they don't know you -
Your love is limitless,
Your heart is a well that goes all the way down,
You can fit everyone in there!
But remember to lie about it!
Love can't exist in the knowledge of other love.

Step Four
At this point you may be debating your decision to totally fuck up your life,
So ask yourself:
Would you rather be happy or interesting?
Would you rather be on the news, or just watching it?
Happy people don't make history,
Happy people make children, then die.

Step Five
Develop a mental disorder that makes you aloof and impossible to contact.
When Someone accuses you of being a bad person,
Call them insensitive!
Instant moral superiority!

Step Six
All of the elements are in place,
Now, start sabotaging your own life.
This isn't crazy, this is research,
This is material,
This is necessary for your personal growth.

Step Seven
You've been in love with two people for a while now,
Tell them about each other!
Whichever one stays is the winner!

Step Eight
Call your boss a fascist dog lover.
Tell your friends fun lies about your other friends.
Tell your mother that she was the reason you tried to kill yourself,
It just isn't depression without total isolation!

Nine
Do something to hurt yourself.
It may be a bicycle "accident",
It may be a razor -
Literal or not, make yourself bleed,

Step Ten
Create something.
Paint your scars on the side of a building.
Write a poem and shout it at strangers.
The misery circus is parading into town and you are holding the banner,
Miles of people are following you,
They are all wearing grey,
A rainbow of grey,
They are all watching as they kick themselves bloody on their own feet.
You have scars,
And everyone wants to kiss them,
This is stigmata pornography,
This is inspiration.
You are why they are still alive,
You are morning in a world of midnights,
You are so brave,
And they want to be brave just like you!

Look at what you have built.

Everything you loved has gone.
Tell yourself it was worth it.

Overall Meaning

The song Audiobook by Neil Hilborn is a satirical take on the idea of ruining one's life for the sake of being interesting. The lyrics start by thanking the listener for purchasing the audiobook "How to Ruin Your Life, for Fun and Profit", as read by the author himself. The song goes on to present ten steps that one can follow to intentionally plunge their life into chaos in attempt to become an interesting person.

The first step is hating oneself, which the song suggests as a given for any human being. The second and third steps are falling in love repeatedly, but not admitting to it. The fourth step proposes choosing to be interesting over happy, implying that happiness is not enough to achieve significance. In the next few steps, the song encourages self-destructive behaviors, such as developing a mental disorder, sabotaging one's own life, hurting oneself, and creating art that romanticizes one's scars.

While the lyrics are clearly exaggerated, Audiobook speaks to a deeper issue of our society valuing struggle and trauma as an important part of one's identity. The song points out how people can become trapped in the cycle of self-damage and create a false sense of significance. It presents societal expectations of success and happiness, and then how this desire is turned on its head by focusing on becoming something else.

I truly think that this is a majorly a misunderstood poem. Although it may seem he is making a joke of depression, self-harm and suicide- he is not. He is describing the fact that people overly-romanticize all the above nowadays yet they say it's worth it because someone finally listens. This poems is about how people fuck up their own lives for the attention they want. It's how being un-happy in this world can get you more love and caring from others than being happy does. When your sad, self-harming: people worry. They kiss your scars, tell you it gets better. /That's/ his point.

You sir are one of the only poets that has made me laugh my but off, rethink life, and made me just want to ball my eyes out all at the same time. You are one of the poets I enjoy most.

When i first listened to this poem. I got so offended. I was like "wow youre just making fun of them". And then i thought maybe i was wrong because id heard his other poems so i knew it had a deeper meaning. So i listen to it more, and then i understand. "You have scars and everyone wants to kiss them" "you are so brave, and they want to be brave just like you" its like, no one cares unless youre depressed. No one is there when youre happy. No one cares if you post something saying "wow im happy right now" they only care if you say "i wanna kill myself" then a hundred people come to say "wait no we love you" and "oh you are so brave and inspirational" do you get me? People should be ther even if youre not depressed, and i think this poem is more true than any ive listened to

I know this is meant to be a meaningful comment but I just gotta say. I love you profile pic. I can imagine the venndiagram between Neil and John Mulaney is slim so hello

Everything he said sounds so "positive", but this is how my life looks like right now. And now I see what I'm doing wrong... Many people have said what I should do, but it sounded so shallow, because they couldn't understand my 'situation' and they tried to give me solutions. Neil helped me to to think about myself, understand myself and he showed me some perspective. It's beautiful what he's doing. I'm grateful and hoping he's doing great. <3

To me, I think it mirrors his own popularity. "Write a poem and shout it at strangers," Is what he does. OCD (And The Future) went viral a few years back. "You are why they are still alive. You are so Brave, and they want to be brave just like you." I imagine after that poem went Viral, and Neil started picking up traction, these are the sort of things that were said to him. I know I have told song writers they're why I'm still alive (because it was true,) so I imagine this was likely something told to him. I don't know, it's a half baked thought.
