Sedaka wrote his 1959 hit "Oh! Carol" about his then-girlfriend, Carol Klein, later to become Carole King. In 1963, King released a humorous answer entitled "Oh Neil".
The Laughter In the Rain Songfacts says Sedaka's hits dried up when The Beatles arrived, but then he teamed up with the lyricist Philip Cody and had a a number 1 hit with "Laughter In The Rain." It re-ignited Sedaka's career and he had 6 more Top-40 hits in America by 1977.
Sedaka's voice is in the tenor range.
Gone With The Morning

Across the window sill
A drum that echoes through
A world that once was still
Gone with the morning
Where did the feeling go?
What was here is here no more
Two daytime strangers wake
A long way from the night
We couldn't make the journey
From the dark to light
Gone with the morning (gone with the morning)
What happens I don't know (I don't know)
The bed is warm where we have slept
Sunshine came and we were swept away
We are only victims of the day
Gone with the morning (gone with the morning)
Where did the feeling go? (where did it go?)
What was here is here no more
We are shadows of the night before
I wish I knew why love
Just fades away and dies
Like stars that live by night
And tumble from the skies
Chased by the dawning (chased by the dawning)
Gone with the morning light (gone with the light)
Where did the feeling go?
Just what happened I don't know
The song refused to linger on
Love was here, but now love is gone (love is gone)
With the morning
The lyrics of Neil Sedaka's "Gone With The Morning" explores the aftermath of a romantic encounter, questioning where the feelings that were present the night before have gone. The first stanza highlights the contrast between the stillness of the night and the vibrant awakening of the morning sun, which serves as a symbol of hope and aspirations. However, the couple in the bed seems untouched by the rays of the sun, feeling like "shadows of the night before". The second stanza portrays the couple as "daytime strangers" and emphasizes the incompatibility of the dark and light. Even though they have shared a passionate experience, they couldn't bridge the gap between their two worlds. In the last verse, the singer expresses his despair and confusion over the inevitable fading away of love, hoping that someday he would find the solution for this dilemma.
Overall, the song's message is hauntingly beautiful, with Neil Sedaka's signature melodious voice that delivers the heartfelt lyrics with ease. It asks questions that most people in love have probably wondered at some point in their lives - Why does love sometimes fade away? What happens to those feelings that were once so strong? The lyrics are evocative and capture the essence of the feelings that arise when romance is fleeting, and the haunting melody adds to the sentimentality of the song.
