Country Home
Neil Young & Crazy Horse Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't like to go down to the flats
'Cause I can't park on a hill
Instead getting a rolling start
I have to pay the bill

I guess I need that city life
It sure has lots of style
But pretty soon it wears me out
And I have to think to smile

I'm thankful for my country home
It gives me peace of mind
Somewhere I can walk alone
And leave myself behind

It's only someone else's potatoes
You pickin' someone else's patch
And if you go down there anyway
It very seldom lasts

I found that out once long ago
And it sure got me confused
I still don't know which way to go
To lose those old spud blues

I'm thankful for my country home
It gives me peace of mind
Somewhere I can walk alone
And leave myself behind

I'm thankful for my country home
It gives me peace of mind
Somewhere I can walk alone
And leave myself behind

I'm thankful for my country home
It gives me peace of mind

Somewhere I can walk alone
And leave myself behind

Overall Meaning

In "Country Home," Neil Young contrasts the lives of those who reside in the city versus rural areas. He begins by stating he does not like to go down to the flats because he can't park on a hill, and instead, he must pay the bill for a rolling start. This line implies that in the city, everything comes with a price tag; even the simplest of tasks require payment, such as parking on a hill. Although the city has style, it eventually wears him out, and he has to think to smile. The hustle and bustle of the city drain him, and he finds himself not enjoying it as much as he'd like to.

He then highlights the advantages of his country home, explaining it gives him peace of mind, and he can leave himself behind by walking alone. He emphasizes the importance of the solitude it provides him. Additionally, he concludes the song by warning his listeners not to pick someone else's potatoes that they didn't plant. He uses this metaphor to illustrate the idea that one can't take what belongs to others without consequences eventually catching up to them. Young reminds everyone to stay true to themselves and not be enticed by what looks like an easy win.

I love a song where the guitar sings as much as the vocals. 🎸

Couldn't agree more. Especially when the guitar seems to be singing with even more emotion and feeling.
Makes me think of the guitar solo in The Firm's "Live in Peace". It literally sounds like the guitar is entering the conversation, has it's own voice, and is providing it's two cents. Maybe it's just me, but it's starts out sounding cool, calm and collected, then literally gets frustrated and starts pleading to be heard, "Don't you get what I'm saying? This is ridiculous! It doesn't have to be this way... "

Alison Penelope when the guitars sing and the vocals are suporting music?
Know him from when csny had their first hits. Sometimes its earlyer here than in their home country. Pity its not the other way around.

I love this song! I recently played it over and over for two hours on my way to my country home. I was belting out: "I'm thankful for my country home. It gives me peace of mind. Somewhere I can walk alone and leave my self behind." Thank you Neil for putting my life to your songs and being the background music to my life.
