A pesar de que inició su carrera artística en 1924, su período de esplendor ocurrió en los años 1930 y 1940, destacándose por sus versiones de «Callecita mía», «Sólo para ti», «Latido tras latido» e «Intriga y pasión». Fue llamada «La Gardel con polleras» y el actor Enrique de Rosas la definió como «La voz diferente». A su vez, desarrolló una breve carrera cinematográfica.1 Fue relacionada sentimentalmente con el compositor Homero Manzi, de quien se dice que le compuso el tango «Malena», aunque Omar dijo que «Sur» y «Solamente ella» también le hacen referencia.2
Tras la Revolución Libertadora de 1955, debió abandonar su profesión, pero regresó en la década siguiente. En la actualidad, a pesar de su avanzada edad, continúa presentándose en diversos festivales y recitales. Es considerada una de las mayores exponentes del tango.3 Ha recibido múltiples premios y honores, como haber sido declarada Ciudadana ilustre de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires en 1996 y Embajadora del Tango en 2010. También, recibió múltiples premios como el Raíz en 2007, el Clarín Espectáculos en 2009 y el Pablo Podestá en 2010.
