Georgia On My Mind
Nelson Willie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Georgia, Georgia, the whole day through.
An' just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind.

Georgia, Georgia, a song of you,
Comes as sweet and clear as moonlight through the pines.

Other arms reach out to me;
Other eyes smile tenderly.
Still in peaceful dreams I see,
The road leads back to you.

Georgia, Georgia, no peace I find.
Just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind.

Georgia, Georgia, no peace I find.
Just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind.
Just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind.

On my mind.
On my mind.

On my mind.
On my mind.

On my mind.
On my mind.

On my mind.
On my mind.

Overall Meaning

"Georgia On My Mind" is a song composed by Hoagy Carmichael with lyrics by Stuart Gorrell. The song gained its popularity thanks to its iconic recording by Ray Charles in 1960, but it was originally written in 1930. The song is about the state of Georgia, in the United States, and it has been recognized as the official state song of Georgia since 1979.

In Nelson Willie's version, the lyrics depict the strong emotional connection the singer has with Georgia. Georgia is on his mind the whole day through, and just an old sweet song reminds him of her. The song that comes as sweet and clear as moonlight through the pines evokes the beauty and serenity of the state. The singer is torn between his desire to stay in Georgia and the pull of other arms and eyes that reach for him. Ultimately, he finds no peace except for his old sweet song, which keeps him yearning for Georgia.

I've never understood why this song pulled so much emotion out of me. It makes me cry. I'm never been to Georgia and I have no ties there.

He'll, I was born and raised in Rural Georgia. If this song does that to you and you're not even from the state, you can imagine the effect it has on me.

I listened to this song many nights as a kid trying to go to sleep. It has always been a calming presence for me. Tonight, it just started playing on my phone that was laying on the counter….all by itself. I needed to hear this tonight. The good Lord blessed us with one of a kind in Willie Nelson. Always my favorite ❤️

I was with you all the way until you inserted your fictional deity. Willie gets the credit, not your imaginary friend.

In the words of Rodney King "Can't we just get along?"
I don't know who said "Live and Let Live" originally but that's a good one too.
You shouldn't shame someone from something you aren't certain of.
Carry on. 🕺
