Funny
Netsayi Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Badu sang about it when she said, 'I guess i'll see you next lifetime'
And Armatrading wants to know if it's the weakness in she,
Pitting what she wants against what she thinks she needs.
From the moment I was introduced to you
I realized I met you in a dream I'd had years ago..
I felt betrayed by mystery and time
Your heart belongs to someone else now, and so does mine.
So why do I keep conjuring you up? Inviting you in?
Balancing you precariously on the periphery?
Isn't it funny to want somebody near you so you can mourn them like a missed oppurtunity?
In Netsayi's song "Funny", the artist talks about a classic case of unrequited love. She references Erykah Badu's song "Next Lifetime" where Badu talks about seeing someone she loves in another lifetime because it's not going to happen in this one. Netsayi also alludes to Joan Armatrading's song where she asks whether it's her weakness to desire something that she knows is not good for her. Netsayi realizes that she had dreamt of this person before meeting them, making their presence in her life even more confusing and unsettling. She feels betrayed by mystery and time, as if fate was playing a cruel trick on her.
Despite the fact that this person's heart belongs to someone else, Netsayi can't help but keep thinking about them and inviting them into her thoughts. She acknowledges the irony in wanting someone near you so you can mourn them as a missed opportunity, showing that sometimes the pain of not having someone can be preferable to the pain of having them but not really being able to have them. The song portrays the complexity of human emotions and the conflicting pulls of the heart and the mind. Netsayi's vocals, along with the melodic instrumentation, give the song a haunting and reflective quality that carries the weight of the emotions she's singing about.
