Zombie
New Hope Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And the violence caused such silence
Who are we mistaken
But you see it's not me, it's not my family
In your head, in your head, they are fighting
With their tanks, and their bombs
And their bombs, and their guns
In your head, in your head, Zombie, Zombie
In your head, what's in your head Zombie
Another mother's breaking heart is taking over
When the violence causes silence
We must be mistaken
It's the same old theme since 1916
In your head, in your head they're still fightin'
With their tanks, and their bombs
And their bombs, and their guns
In your head, in your head they are dyin'
In your head, in your head, Zombie, Zombie
In your head, what's in your head Zombie
The song "Zombie" by New Hope reflects on the violence and destruction that has become a seemingly never-ending cycle in certain parts of the world. The first verse begins with "Another head hangs lowly, child is slowly taken," referring to the loss of innocent lives in conflict. The violence caused by this loss of life results in silence, often causing people to question who is being mistaken. The following line is an assertion that the violence and destruction is not the fault of the singer or their family, emphasizing the scope of the issue beyond one person or group of people.
The chorus repeats the phrase "In your head, in your head," referencing the cyclical nature of the conflict, and the lasting effects of it on the minds of those who witness it. "They are fighting/With their tanks, and their bombs/And their bombs, and their guns/In your head, in your head they are cryin'" highlights the magnitude of the destruction, with weapons of war being used, and the toll it takes on innocent civilians. The second verse begins by focusing on the mothers of the victims, their breaking hearts a result of the same old theme of conflict that has persisted for over a century. The chorus is repeated, emphasizing the lasting effects of war and conflict on the human psyche.
Overall, "Zombie" is a deeply introspective and emotional song that sheds light on the destructive and cyclical nature of war and conflict. It highlights the toll that these situations take on innocent people, especially children, and urges listeners to consider the impact of violence and destruction on the human psyche.
