"Touched by the Hand of God" was a single released by New Order in December 1987. The song had originally appeared on the soundtrack to the film Salvation! and the version released as a single was remixed by Arthur Baker. The video, directed by Kathryn Bigelow, that accompanied the song parodied glam metal groups of the same period, with the band obviously miming to the music, wearing wigs and also wearing a lot of black leather. The b-side was a dub remix, titled "Touched by the Hand of Dub" and the release had the catalogue number FAC 193; production duties are credited to New Order. Although not a track pulled for release from a studio album, "Touched by the Hand of God" does appear in remixed form on the 1995 compilation The Best of New Order.
The title of the song is believed by some to be a reference to a goal Diego Maradona scored for Argentina against England in the 1986 football World Cup quarter-final match. (See Hand of God goal). Others believe it is a reference to masturbation. Taken at face value, the lyric - including the title line - refers to lost love, and was probably inspired by the break-up of Bernard Sumner's marriage.

I couldn't look at you
I guess you knew it
But I never realized that we were through
And I'm down here all alone with every feeling that I own
You can't take that away
And with every breath we take
And the illusions we create will come to you someday
And I was touched by the hand of God
Never knew it
But of course I was
I never hoped to do the things in this world I wanted to
Because everything I own, it belongs to you
I've never looked at you in a sexual way in my life before
And I've never woken up like this so desperately before
And I was touched by the hand of God
Never knew it
But of course I was
I was touched by the hand of God
Never knew it
But of course I was
Touched by the hand of God
Never knew it
But of course I was
I was touched by the hand of God
Never knew it
But of course I was
I was touched (touched)
I was touched (touched)
The lyrics of New Order's song "Touched by the Hand of God" portray the feeling of being deeply touched by a special someone, but also the complicated nature of relationships. The song starts with the singer standing by the ocean, where he sees the face of the person who has touched him deeply. However, he cannot look at this person and is aware that the relationship is over, but he never realized it before. He is now alone with his feelings, which cannot be taken away from him. He acknowledges the illusions they create but knows that they will come back to haunt them someday.
The second verse reveals that the singer has given everything he owns to this person and now never hopes to do anything in the world that he wanted to. He has never looked at this person in a sexual way before, but now he wakes up every day feeling desperate. The chorus repeats the idea that the singer has been "touched by the hand of God" and "never knew it," but "of course I was." The touching is metaphorical and refers to the impact this person has had on him.
Overall, the song explores the complexity and intensity of relationships and how they can leave a profound impact on us. The metaphor of being touched by the hand of God emphasizes the power and significance of these connections.
Line by Line Meaning
I was standing by the ocean when I saw your face
I saw you for the first time when I was at the ocean
I couldn't look at you
I was too overwhelmed to stare at you
I guess you knew it
You probably realized that I was looking at you
But I never realized that we were through
I didn't know that our relationship was over
And I'm down here all alone with every feeling that I own
I'm left with my emotions all by myself
You can't take that away
No one can take my emotions from me
And with every breath we take
With every passing moment
And the illusions we create will come to you someday
Our perceptions of reality will eventually become apparent to you
And I was touched by the hand of God
I experienced a profoundly spiritual experience
Never knew it
I wasn't aware of its significance
But of course I was
In retrospect, it's clear that I was touched by a higher power
I never hoped to do the things in this world I wanted to
I never expected to achieve my dreams and aspirations
Because everything I own, it belongs to you
My possessions and my heart belong to you
I've never looked at you in a sexual way in my life before
I've never seen you in a romantic or lustful way
And I've never woken up like this so desperately before
I've never felt this vulnerable and helpless
Touched by the hand of God
A reminder of the overwhelming, divine power of the experience
Never knew it
Yet again, I wasn't aware of its significance
But of course I was
In the end, the spiritual experience left a lasting impression on me
Touched by the hand of God
Repeated once again, for emphasis
Never knew it
As if in awe of the experience
But of course I was
In retrospect, the experience is profound and life-changing
Touched by the hand of God
A final acknowledgement of the spiritual experience
I was touched (touched)
A final repetition of the chorus
I was touched (touched)
A final repetition of the chorus
