I want a ticket, just for one
He said
Well, if you insist
But where you wanna go, a miss?
Destination anywhere
East or west, I don't care
This old world, ain't got no back door
He looked at me with a funny face and said
Are you sure you wanna go just anyplace?
I said, If you ever loved someone, the way I loved that man
Surely Mr. ticket agent, you could understand
Destination anywhere
East or west, I don't care
You see my baby don't want me no more
This old world ain't got no back door
'Cause if it did, it would swing both ways
And we'd go on back to happy yesterdays
When he loved me tenderly
And all he needed was me
As I starr through the window of the train
I thought I heard my baby call my name
But it was just the conductor saying
Which stop would you prefer?
Oh, destination anywhere
East or west, I don't care
You see my baby don't want me no more
This old world, ain't got no back door
Destination anywhere
East or west, I don't care
Destination anywhere
East or west, I don't care
Destination anywhere
East or west, I don't care
Niamh Kavanagh's Destination Anywhere is a song about heartbreak and feeling lost. The lyrics illustrate a woman's desperation to escape from the pain of being rejected by the man she loves. She goes to the railroad station and asks for a one-way ticket to any destination because she doesn't care where she goes as long as it's far away from her former love. The line "You see my baby don't want me no more/This old world, ain't got no back door" showcases her profound sadness and hopelessness - it feels like there are no new doors or opportunities for her in this world.
The ticket agent is suspicious of her request and asks, "Are you sure you wanna go just anyplace?" to which she replies that only someone who has loved and lost could ever understand. The recurring line, "Destination anywhere/East or west, I don't care" emphasizes her disillusionment and indifference, as she acknowledges that nothing really matters anymore. The lyrics recall the sweet memories she shared with her partner, the times when he loved her tenderly and only needed her. In a heartfelt chorus, she repeats the phrase, which emphasizes her aimless journey that could take her anywhere until she finds her way home.
