Beluga
Nick Camillo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some legends say to be careful what you wish for,
because you never know what's a-coming down your way.
All the old housewives say to be careful what you die for,
You would be wise to keep an eye out 'cause
Good old Beelzebub's always sneaking round the bend,

and yesterday has come and gone, tomorrow's nearly drawing to an end.
Beluga was a boy,
he knew the verses and his christian name,
but since he lost himself in the woods one day
he just couldn't bring himself to put his hands back on the cross.

But Jesus, he still had hope, his mother told him so.

His father he would say, 'son if it were up to me,
you'd be praying to the holy see until
you fall into your grave with a bible, some holy water and your rosaries'

I want to know who were they to say such things?

Soon you'll be destitute and godless with a sickness that the devil surely brings.
Soon you'll be rotting in a coffin with your relics and your rubies and your rings.

Overall Meaning

In the first paragraph, the lyrics caution against the consequences of wishing for something without fully understanding what may come along with it. The mention of old housewives adds a touch of wisdom and experience, suggesting that their advice should be taken seriously. The line "Good old Beelzebub's always sneaking round the bend" references the devil, implying that one should be cautious of the temptations and negative influences that may be present in life. The lyrics also touch upon the fleeting nature of time, emphasizing that life is constantly moving forward and that we should be mindful of how we spend our days.

The second paragraph introduces the character of Beluga, who seems to have lost his connection to his Christian identity after getting lost in the woods. This loss of faith is symbolized by his reluctance to touch the cross. However, despite his doubts, his mother reassures him that Jesus still holds hope for him. On the other hand, his father's expectations are quite different. He believes that Beluga should be devoutly religious, adhering to the practices and rituals of the church until his dying breath. This contrast highlights the conflicting opinions and pressures that Beluga faces in regard to his faith.

The third paragraph questions the authority of those who declare Beluga's fate based on their own narrow beliefs. The lyrics express resentment towards those who predict that Beluga will end up destitute and godless, plagued by the devil's sickness. It portrays these judgments as baseless and unjust, suggesting that they are made out of fear or narrow-mindedness. The mention of relics, rubies, and rings further implies that these individuals are more concerned with material possessions and external appearances than with genuine spirituality or understanding.

Overall, these lyrics seem to explore themes of faith, doubt, societal expectations, and the power of individual belief. They challenge the idea that religious devotion should be determined solely by societal norms and urge listeners to question and redefine their own spiritual journeys. The lyrics also serve as a reminder to not judge others based on their outward expressions of faith or lack thereof, as there may be deeper personal struggles and experiences that shape their relationship with religion.
