Love Me
Nicki Minaj Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Ooh
Monica and Keyshia Cole

I used to think love had to hurt
So I'd do shit to make it worse
Got off on the toxic words
I used to think love had to hurt
But, lately
I've been thinkin', maybe
No one needs to save me
'Cause I love me enough for all of y'all
And, lately
They've been tryna change me
But that shit don't faze me
'Cause I love me enough for all of y'all

Uh, ayy, yo
I used to think my happiness depended on a man (a man)
Diamond on the ring finger blingin' on my hand (my hand)
Sativa or indica, it don't matter what the strain
The worst drug of all, the addiction to a man (a man- ooh)
Insecure, real jealous, bitter little man (a man)
Cursin', beat a woman, but he never hit a man (a man)
Man, yeah, you such a man, damn (a man)
Like Tina in a limo, well, bitch had to go ham, scram (aah)
Fuck I look like? (Brrt) I wish I would like (yeah)
Wasted a couple years now I'm good like (yeah)
It's worth the pain, I'ma still have a good life
Still be a great mother, still be a good wife

I used to think love had to hurt (used to)
So I'd do shit to make it worse
Got off on the toxic words
I used to think love had to hurt

But, lately
I've been thinkin', maybe
No one needs to save me
'Cause I love me enough for all of y'all (all of y'all)
And, lately
They've been tryna change me (ooh)
But that shit don't faze me (ooh)
'Cause I love me enough for all of y'all

Uh, ayy, yo
I don't need bitter betty's to believe me (ooh, yeah)
And I don't care how media to percieves me
I just do it for the girls who ain't never had it easy (ooh)
The woman who conceived me, the girl in the mirror that just cries when she sees me (oh)
Easy, I'm breezy
Finger on the trigger yellin', "Squeeze me, relieve me" (oh)
I thought that everyone who loved me would leave me
But, fuck that, I love this new chic named Me-Me (I love)
First things first, all my girls, know your worth
Self-love is the greatest love on earth (yeah)
Cry your eyes out, get it out, it's the worst
But love don't hurt, no

I used to think love had to hurt (used to)
So I'd do shit to make it worse
Got off on the toxic words
I used to think love had to hurt

But, lately
I've been thinkin', maybe
No one needs to save me
'Cause I love me enough for all of y'all (all of y'all)
And, lately
They've been tryna change me (ooh)
But that shit don't faze me (ooh)
'Cause I love me enough for all of y'all

Love me enough, love me enough, love me enough for all of y'all (I love)
Love me enough, love me enough, love me enough for all of y'all (all of y'all)
All of y'all, all of y'all, all of y'all, all love for y'all (all of y'all)
All of y'all, all of y'all, all of y'all, all love

Oh, baby, don't you play
Wipe your pretty little face
Let 'em say what they say
Oh, baby, walk away (ooh)
Oh, baby, don't you play
Wipe your pretty little face
Let 'em say what they say
Celebrate you walked away
Celebrate, celebrate, celebrate you walked away (celebrate)
Celebrate, celebrate (you walked away, yeah), celebrate you walked away (oh)

Walked away

I gotta celebrate, we gotta celebrate
Walked away, c'mon, woo

Overall Meaning

These lyrics from Nicki Minaj's song "Love Me" convey the artist's personal journey of self-empowerment and self-love. In the song, she reflects on her past experiences and how she used to believe that love had to hurt, leading her to engage in toxic behavior to worsen her relationships. However, she has now realized that she doesn't need anyone to save her because she loves herself enough for everyone. Despite others trying to change her, their attempts don't affect her anymore because she has found self-acceptance.

The second verse expands on her past beliefs that her happiness depended on a man and the addictive nature of being in a relationship. Nicki contrasts the negative qualities of some men she encountered, such as jealousy and insecurity, with her own strength and resilience. She no longer wishes to be in a relationship that brings her down and wastes her time. Nicki expresses her determination to have a good life, be a great mother, and still be a good wife, despite not needing a man to validate her happiness.

The chorus reinforces the idea that she used to believe love had to be painful, but now she understands that love doesn't have to hurt. She no longer engages in self-destructive behavior and instead embraces self-love and self-worth. Nicki asserts that she loves herself enough for everyone and no longer needs someone else to complete her or save her.

In the bridge, Nicki further emphasizes her newfound confidence and disregard for others' opinions. She doesn't care how the media perceives her and does what she does to inspire and uplift women who have faced struggles. She mentions the girl in the mirror who previously cried when she saw herself, but now she values herself and feels easygoing. She proclaims that self-love is the most significant form of love on earth.

The last part of the song reinforces the theme of empowerment and walking away from toxic situations. Nicki encourages listeners not to play into negativity and to wipe away any tears. She celebrates those who have walked away from toxic relationships and shows support for their decisions. The repetition of "celebrate you walked away" emphasizes the importance of embracing self-love and leaving behind anything that doesn't serve one's well-being. The song ends with a celebratory and empowering tone, suggesting that finding self-love and walking away from negativity is a cause for celebration.

And it shows, this album was truly her worst. So confused, each song sounding completely different from the last, each verse/chorus sounding different from the last within one song. Such a confused structure, really not a good album. I love nicki minaj but I'm not just gonna mindlessly say she is great when she hasn't made a good album here.
