Overall Meaning

Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing in 2013 at Wacken Open Air festival, in front of a 82k+ audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
As I could see, you understood very well what happened on that stage. You felt the power of this song and appreciate all the key elements of a Nightwish show: the intricate composition, the high level of musicianship of all band members, the stellar vocals and charisma of Floor Jansen, our Dutch metal queen. Of course, your professional experience helped you a lot in understanding that. As you said, "you got to love them". Welcome among us :)
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):

" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

That was one of the better reactions of a voice teacher, I would put this in my personal Top 3 "voice teacher reactions" and Top 5 overall.

I really liked, that not only Floor's singing got you, but that the whole song got you. And it was really nice to see, how exited you were through different parts of the song.

At the end you mentioned, that you would like to do more of Nightwish and Floor. Here is my personal recommendation for you in that order:

1. "Yours is an Empty Hope" (Nightwish) from Wembley 2015: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyLsU7Q333k
As for the reason why I suggest this, you have heard about 50%-60% of Floor's vocal range, maybe less. In this song, you can hear the "other side" of her range. I'll leave it at that, no spoilers.

2. "About Love I don't know a Thing" (Floor solo) from Beste Zangers 2019: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztB7GH1IyUk
I picked this link, because it is a bit longer and gives both the intro and outro to the song. It is in Dutch, but there are English subtitles, you can turn on. The song itself is in English, as the title might suggest. And to the reason why I suggest this song: It is one of the best examples of what Floor's voice and singing can do to people. Again, I'll leave it at that, no spoilers.

Last but not least, just a few basic facts about what you just watched. All the details and deep dive stuff I'll leave for the Nightwish Army, they are better at that than me.

The concert "Wacken 2013" is actually a festival in Germany and one of the biggest Metal festivals in the World. Nightwish was the headline act for 2013 and Floor was only singing with them for a few month at that point, not even a band member, yet.

There were about 80,000+ people in the audience.

If I could go back in time and could go to just one concert, for the longest time it would have been Queen live at Wembley 1986, but now it is Nightwish at Wacken 2013 by a mile and a half.

I really hope to see more Nightwish and Floor on your channel soon.

Welcome to your first stop of a probably long, surprising always awesome Nightwish journey.

This band is from Finland.
Tuomas is the keyboarder, Songwriter, composer.
Marco is playing the bass and doing also the vocals. He is very versatile and an awesome singer as well. You might watch „The Islander“ from Tampere to experience this.
Emppu is playing the guitar. He can shred it but he always does exactly that much, that is required by the song.
Kai (also Wintersun) is now at the drums and replaced the original drummer Jukka (whom you saw here) who had stop playing the drums due to health issues. But he still is with the band. Julka was a perfect drummer and showman, Kai is a perfect drummer and a machine and beast at the drums.
Then there is Troy, a multi instrumentalist from England who in older performances supported the band at some tracks but became luckily a full member of the band after this tour. He‘s a great singer as well.
Last but not least there is Floor, the Dutch singer. She is the bands third singer after Tarja (operatic) and Annett from Sweden (pop/rock). She can sing really everything from opera over pop/ rock to growls

This gig was at Wacken. Wacken is THE metal festival worldwide. Nightwish were one of the headliners in 2013.
It is in the north of Germany in a rural area. Therefore the bullhead with flames is the Wacken symbol. There are more than 80.000 metalheads having a big party each year.

Here are some suggestions for your next stops:

—> There are only great songs from Wacken: „Story Time“ and "Ever Dream" are catchy in a very positive way. "Song of Myself" starts catchy and ends with everyone headbanging. "Romanticide", "Last Ride of the Day" and "Ghostriver" are the heavier ones.

—> "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean" (Buenos Aires) will give you a metal and power blast: Maximum speed and Marco (the singing bass player) becomes Hannibal Lecter ;-)

—> "Yours an Empty Hope" from Wembley (have a good look!! at the growls. You'll be surprised.)

—> „Dead Boys Poem“ from Buenos Aires (so amazing and emotional)

—> „Weak Fantasy“ (Tampere): Kai the beastat the drums, Troy joins in, great duets with Floor and Marco, …

—> Elvenjig / Elvenpath (Buenos Aires): Awesome intro and it continues on that level

—> "The greatest Show on Earth" (Tampere) is one of the two most epic songs. The title is not about the gig, but about the topic of the song: The evolution of mankind.

—> "The Poet and the Pendulum“ (Wembley) is my personal absolute masterpiece of Nightwish. Be sure to know the background of this song ahead (short version see below *)

From the new album there are for obvious reasons no live sessions so far. For all songs there are lyric videos, except for „Noise". But maybe you'll give some songs a try as well. It's an awesome album. Definitely not an "easy" one with a lot of really unique songs, different from what is "typical" for Nightwish. Floor said that she was really challenged to sing the songs that Tuomas wrote for her. Knowing her abilities, you can imagine that they are "special“. It‘s a good idea to hear the album in the given order, but nevertheless here are some of my options to some of the songs.

-->"Noise" is probably the most "typical" song and the only one with "real video". The video is great as the song itself

--> "Tribal" is the heaviest one and Kai, the drummer, had to change his normal setup to be able to play it.

--> "Shoemaker" (about Eugene Shoemaker) is such a heavenly and epic song with the possible epic ending.

—> „Pan“ is just an amazing ride. When it starts you for a moment think you‘re listening to Floors husbands band „Sabaton“. In the song you‘ll be reminded to „Tribal“ and „Noise“.

—> Procession“ a rather calm song with so amazing vocals by Floor

--> "Harvest" is so different with Troy singing, that you will wonder if you're listening to Nightwish.

—> „Endlessness“ is Marcos song and shows his great voice.

--> "Music", „How's the Heart", ... are really cool songs as well. Of course.

The album challenged Floor as singer, which is not easy to do, as she is one of the best and most versatile singers in the world.

If you'd like to Explore Floor on her own:

Beste Zangers Just in case (which I can really recommend) you're going to do "Beste Zangers" make sure you take the clips posted by "jenniezelf" on YouTube as she has also included the talking / interviews before and after with english subtitles. The concept of the show is, that on one day all singers sing a song for one of them.

It's a song that is by that singer or a song that means a lot for him / her. So it is very interesting to get to know the story behind each song. And it will help to understand the reactions of the other singers. Floor is singing there in German, Dutch, Spanis and English. Her "Phanom of the Opera" duet with Henk Poort is legendary.

* Backstory for „Poet and the Pendulum“

Tuomas (the keyboarder and songwriter) was in depression after the split from their first singer Tarja. He was in the position to either commit suicide in real real life or to write a song about it and die within that song. Luckily he choose the latter option. He is the poet, "killed" by the pendulum. And afterwards there is darkness, silence and just a fading heartbeat. It gives me a shiver every time.

As this song is so emotional for him all the others have an eye on him. He even had his the vocals turned off in his in ears.

One detail showing the ingenuity of Tuoams: Exactly three minutes after the words "Now I have only three minutes and counting" he is "killed" by the pendulum. And then everything becomes dark and there is just this fading heartbeat of the dying poet.

From what I have heard, her husband/manager was (from the bands point of view) the core of the problem. There is one song addressing him: "Master Passion Greed"
They never played it live and will never do so. It is maybe their heaviest song, but for sure the most angry one. You should definitely listen to it.

This is why its so amazing to watch people react to NW.
If a person that loves music listen to it.
you can just see the emotion because its impossible to hide.
One nightwish song is a journey they take you on a quest and tell you a story, one song can make you cry, smile and dance at the same time. goosebumbs and heartdrops.
Toumas the main creator of NW songs and music is by my meaning one of our times best composers. people talk about NW, about Floor. and yes also about him, but in the overall music scene I really think he is underrated for what he gives people. what he creates..
there is just nothing that just do what NW do.
And if you first let them take you on a journey, it never ends, you crave for more, you need more. its a gift you find no place else.
That is NW. A story from within, that opens doors inside of you, you either wanted to forget, couldn't remember or outright didn't know existed.

Looks like I beat the rest of the army here, so I'll just say welcome to Nightwish. If you think you've just witnessed Floor's range then, well, you have only seen about 40% of it. Her range goes from deep death growls to glass shattering opera. Oh man, this was one of the best reactions I have seen to this song for a long time! Fantastic and so wholesome to see your genuine reaction!
But the amount of song interruptions and adverts during this video was infuriation! The pause at the end of Floors vocals just made me sad, even though I could see how much you were loving and enjoying the song and vocals.

I've gotta say though, you've got some of the most unfortunate pause timing I have ever seen 😅 If you can't wait for a phrase to resolve or for the next transition, I'd highly recommend jumping back 10 seconds before you resume (J on your keyboard will do this) to keep from breaking the flow quite so jarringly. A Dutch program, Beste Zangers featured Floor Jansen in the 2019 season. Several performances were stunning, including her Phantom of the Opera Duet with Henk Poort, her stunning performance of "Shallow" with Tim Akkerman, her performance in German of "Vilja Lied", a Dutch performance of "Mama" and a wonderful Spanish performance of "Que Se Siente". Besides featuring her prowess of singing in various languages, she continues to dip into her entire palette of vocal colors to create compelling images of each song she performs. I highly recommend incorporating some of these intimate performances to compare and contrast with the truly GRAND performances with Nightwish.

I really wonder if this performance can ever be outweighed by anyone or any group. I wish I had been in Wacken 2013. Fortunately it's been caught on video. This reaction is about 30th or 40th of this particular live performance I have watched. It never fails to bring tears to my eyes.

I’m glad you finally discovered Nightwish. Floor Jansen is an incredible beast of a singer. But her base Marco will really surprise you, he’s got incredible vocals for days. He has such arrange for somebody who damaged his voice in surgery years ago. I believe he can’t do falsetto because of it. But you won’t even notice that.

I'm 72 and can't believe it. I've been to many, many great concerts over the years and hope to go to more when this global nastiness goes away. The one concert I will always regret missing (and I don't do regrets as a rule!) is this 2013 Wacken performance of a band I've enjoyed from their early beginnings. Watching you watching this with such enthusiasm only enhances the yearning I have for this time and place. I look on that crowd through the green tinge of envy! Thanks for uploading this and for your excitement. I'm right there with you! Keep up the great reactions!

You finally got to Nightwish!! Loved you're enthusiasm and excitement of discovering this amazing band. A lot of people are going to recommend More stuff from this concert(Wacken 2013) and Floor's performances from Beste Zangers, but I am going to send you to something purely mind blowing. This is a Nightwish song off their latest album which came out earlier this year. This is the only live, but in studio performance out there of this song, as all concerts were sadly cancelled this year. As you've seen with this performance of Ghost Love Score, Nightwish's sound is HUGE haha. What I love about this song I'm recommending, is that it's a fully stripped back, acoustic version with Floor singing and Troy(a multi-instrumentalist with Nightwish) on the guitar. It will allow you to really hear her voice as she navigates some truly difficult melodies and how technical she is.

I must have watched something like 30 reaction videos to this song in two days. I’ve been a Nightwish fan since Oceanborn came out in -98 but watching videos of people, many avery knowledgeable in music, just reacting to them with pure surprise and joy is a completely new and endearing angle into their music.

I will say from a singing perspective, Ghost Love Score is one of Nightwish's more challenging songs. It takes a lot out of you because of the length alone. The way Floor does it can be even more exhausting. Tarja (the original singer) kept it strictly operatic the entire time, which I always found to be much easier, despite the length of the song. That said, I am always amazed at Floor's stamina, because her method of performing this song is extremely dynamic and I would say vocally more taxing. She is a powerhouse.

Do note that this song is so strongly recommended because it is a gentle easing into the astounding versatility of Floor and the masterful compositional and lyrical genius of Tuomas, who writes 95% of Nightwish's material.
Every member of Nightwish is world-class, and Floor is one of three current lead vocalists, the others being Marco (seen here on bass, sometimes plays the guitar) and Troy (not performing in this song, but a master of Celtic folk instruments, and pretty much any other instrument he turns his attention to, as well as being a highly accomplished singer).
As you are mostly focussed on voice, I'll only mention in passing that Emppu (on lead guitar) is one of the most criminally underrated guitarists in the world, mainly because he just plays what the song needs, and isn't given to showing off.
Both drummers Jukka (seen here - had to stop for health reasons) and Kai (who is the current drummer - selected by Jukka in what must have been the hardest and most selfless act imaginable) are amazing, despite different styles.
Tuomas is the Metal Mozart and absolute master of keyboards, composition and poetic lyrics.

what an amazing reaction! Seeing how much fun you had was beautiful.

I'm sure someone in the Nightwish Army has already suggested it but Marko, the bassist in the band, is also an amazing singer. So I would highly recommend The Islander Live in Tampere. I always suggest Vocal Coaches or Voice Teachers to listen to Your's Is an Empty Hope, Live in Mexico City is my favorite. Floor does some amazing things in that one I love to listen to people explain the techniques for. Hope you continue your journey into Nightwish!

MoV, It would be a good idea to look at some of the choices that Gabriel Bardac gave you and also Valeriu Dudau. One song that I did not see in their lists was "O Mio Babbino Caro". That is how versatile she is as a singer. As a voice teacher, you could use any of the vocal performances from this concert as a training tool for your students for how they should stand on stage and perform. I hope you noticed that her shoulders never moved when breathing while singing. She also released a cover "Let It Go" from the Disney movie Frozen and a cover of Heart's "Alone", both of them are spectacular.

This never gets old. Juuka grooving on his TAMA double-base set, Emppu driving the rhythm in his signature ESP EV-1, Marco giving us epic base lines in his Warwick Buzzard, Tuomas sharing his genius on his KORGs and Floor leading the crowd like a modern-day 6-foot 1-inch Valkyrie and seducing like a siren. They are all at the top of the talent tree. Each one alone could lead a band into greatness let alone all five of them. One of the best live performances of all time. Not only musically but staging and production is unmatched.

I just want to point out a fact that the "Army" never says and especially for this Wacken gig is essential to really judge the power of this particular gig. Remember that on this Wacken performance Floor was still new to the band and the audience, who eventually bought the tickets basically to see Nightwish with Anette Olzon. Floor replaced her in the middle of the tour and really didn't have a lot of time to learn and adapt the songs, joining the band coming from a burnout. This Wacken gig was a true turn point - not only she completely knocked down and convinced even the hard core fans, but also you can feel the motivation of the band growing from song to song with this exceptional performance (especially Tuomas being really in a "depressive" phase after losing 2 vocalists. And all this under pressure - new to the band, not yet alot of experience/rehearsals with the band, an audience being here for another singer, AND the pressure of a live DVD production under all this circumstances! Checkout the documentary "Please learn the Setlist in 48 hours" which tells the story from the Denver debacle to the beginnings with Floor ;)

If you watch the full show it starts rather "reserved" and with an introduction of Floor to the audience. From song to song you can read the motivation and exitement on the bans members faces and the show gets better and better. It's known that keyboarder/songwriter Tuomas had the vocals muted in his monitors, because he didn't support to hear the songs again with another singer. But - and this is purely speculative and my personal interpretation - at 1:00:26 you see him throw something like a headset away. Kinda like "Hell what I am doing, I am about to miss the best gig of my life".
