Every Summertime
Niki Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Eighteen, we were undergrads
Stayed out late, never made it to class, uh
Outer Richmond in a taxi cab
You were sweating bullets on the way to my dad's
And oh
You said, "baby, think we're moving too fast!"

I swear the magnolias flashed a smile (flashed a smile)
And that's when I caught me hoping you'd stay a while (stay a while)

Baby, I'd give up anything to travel inside your mind
Baby, I'll fall in love again come every summertime
My daddy taught me to choose 'em wisely but you don't have to try
'Cause baby I fall in love every summertime

Twenty-five and we're missing church
Laugh 'bout everyone we're hating at work
Dinner with your sister and the jokes kinda hurt
Cry the way home and you're putting me first, oh
Yeah, we just always know what to say

Mm

We're strolling down the boulevard
And dancing under streetlights
Oh, yeah
Every year we get older and I'm still on your side (oh I)
Hey, uh

Baby, I'd give up anything to travel inside your mind
Baby, I'll fall in love again come every summertime
My daddy taught me to choose 'em wisely but you don't have to try
'Cause baby I fall in love every summertime

Every day is summertime
Every day is summertime
Every day is summertime
With you

Every day is summertime
Every day is summertime

Every day is summertime
With you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Niki's song "Every Summertime" describe a love that continues to bloom with each passing summer. The song starts off reflecting on a past summer with the singer and their partner at the age of eighteen, where they stayed out late and never made it to class. They reminisce about a particular moment when the magnolias flashed a smile, and the hope that their partner would stay a while. The chorus then repeats the idea that the singer falls in love every summertime, no matter what their dad taught them about choosing partners wisely.

As the song progresses, it describes a present summer with the couple at the age of twenty-five. They're missing church and laughing about the people they hate at work. They share a dinner with the partner's sister, and the jokes kind of hurt, but the partner is still putting the singer first. The two stroll down the boulevard and dance under the streetlights, and the singer insists that every year they get older, the partner is still on their side. The final chorus repeats the idea that every day is summertime with the partner.

Overall, "Every Summertime" is a song about the endurance of love, even as time passes and people change. It reflects on the idea that, no matter how old you are or what stage of life you're in, there's always a chance to fall in love again.
