Sakuma Masahide composed most of the music with input from Pierson and Yuki who also wrote the lyrics. From the 30-second opening track, which starts with ominous techno music and ends with Yuki and Pierson exclaiming "Hello everybody nice to meet you we're NiNa," the band's eponymous and only album is very diverse.
The distinctive album contains a wide variety of music from straight forward ballads to electronica. Lost Without You
Nina Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Of course, I do
Except when soft rains fall
And drips from leaves then I recall
The thrill of being sheltered in your arms
Of course, I do
But I get along without you very well
Of course, I have
Or maybe except when I hear your name
Or someone's laugh that is the same
I've forgotten you just like I should
What a guy
What a fool am I
To think my aching heart could kid the moon
What's in store
Should I phone once more
No, no, no, no, no it's best that I stick to my tune
I said that I get along without you very well
Of course, I do
Except perhaps in spring
But then I should never ever think of spring
For that would surely break my heart in two
In Nina Simone's song "I Get Along Without You Very Well," the singer gives the impression that she has moved on from a past relationship, yet various triggers evoke bittersweet memories of her former lover. She claims that the loss of her lover does not affect her, but she remembers moments of tenderness when sheltered in his arms, especially during soft rains. She sings that she has forgotten him, but the sound of his name or a familiar laugh brings back poignant memories. The chorus asserts the singer's self-sufficiency, but the lines, "what a guy, what a fool am I," reveal the underlying pain she feels about breaking up with her lover. She recognizes that, as someone who has been hurt, calling him again would be unwise. Finally, she acknowledges that even though she can withstand the seasons without him, spring would be the hardest to bear since it symbolizes renewal and love.
The song comes across as both melancholy and evocative, making it a timeless classic. It's clear that the persona in the song has found it hard to move on, even though she claims that the breakup does not affect her. She has to keep reminding herself of her strength and resilience to go on without him, dismissing any thoughts of contact with him. The reference to the moon at the end of the second verse recalls the singer's vulnerability and pain, even though she tries to appear self-sufficient.
