These Days
Nina Gerber Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I've been out walkin'
I don't do that much talkin' these days
These days
These days I seem to think a lot
About the things that I forgot to do
For you
And all the times I had the chance to
And I had a lover
But it's so hard to risk another these days
These days
Now if I seem to be afraid
To live the life I have made in song
Well, it's just that I've been losin' for so long

Well, I'll keep on movin', movin' on
Things are bound to be improvin' these days
One of these days
These days I'll sit on corner stones
And count the time in quarter tones to ten, my friend

Don't confront me with my failures
I had not forgotten them

Overall Meaning

Nina Gerber's song "These Days" is a poignant ballad that speaks to themes of regret, missed opportunities and fear of taking risks. The lyrics reveal an introspective narrator who has come to a kind of impasse in life, where she spends more time reflecting on the past than pursuing new experiences in the present. She frames this as a choice, by saying "I don't do that much talkin' these days," implying that she has deliberately withdrawn from the world in order to introspect.

The first verse sets the scene: the singer has been out walking and thinking about all of the things she forgot to do for a loved one. This suggests that she has perhaps let past relationships or opportunities slip away, and now feels regret for not having taken advantage of them. The following lines introduce another theme, that of fear and hesitancy. The singer had a lover at some point, but is now afraid to risk getting hurt again. This fear has taken hold of her to the point where she is not fully living her life and is stuck in a cycle of indecision and worry.

The chorus of the song expresses a longing for change and a tentative hope for a brighter future. The singer says she'll "keep on movin', movin' on" and that things are bound to improve "one of these days." The reference to "cornerstones" and "quarter tones" is interesting because it suggests a shift in perspective; the singer will begin to see time in a different way, as measured by musical intervals and small, meaningful moments. The final lines of the song are particularly powerful, as the singer acknowledges that she has not forgotten her failures, but doesn't want to be confronted with them. This seems to imply that she is ready to move on, but is still struggling with the weight of her past mistakes.

Overall, "These Days" is a moving and thought-provoking song that touches on universal themes of regret, fear, and hope. It invites the listener to reflect on their own lives and consider what changes they might make in order to live more fully.

Down by the river the water’s runnin’ low
As I wander underneath the trees
In the park outside of town
The leaves turned brown and yellow now
Are falling on the ground
Remembering the way you felt
Beside me here when love was new
That feeling’s just grown stronger
Since I fell in love with you
Now we’ve only got these times we’re living in
We’ve only got these times we’re living in
Winter wood piled on the porch
Walnuts scattered on the ground
And wood smoke risin’ to the sky
An old man comes home from work
And he hugs his wife in a sweat-stained shirt
Walks hrough that door to
Where it’s warm inside
And I’m walking as the wind
Rustles in the fallen leaves
My footsteps picking out a tune
My heart sings silently
Now we’ve only got these times we’re living in
We’ve only got these times we’re living in
See the roses dried and faded
The tall trees carved and painted
With long forgotten lovers’ names
Old cars standing empty
And dogs barking at me
As I walk through the quiet streets the same
If I could I’d tell you now
There are no roads that do not bend
And the days like flowers bloom and fade
And they do not come again
We’ve only got these times we’re living in
We’ve only got these times we’re living in

Ditto and she melted the ice off my good man's heart, and opened the dam on my good man's chest just in time!!

Yes, I stumbled on Kate wolf late as she had just passed away. Bought much of her music. Love his voice. She was born in San Francisco and her talent and passion led to what I call west coast folk. She was a wonderful performer with her clear and sweet voice.

An incredibly beautiful song, perfectly rendered. Folk music doesn’t get any better than this. Kate Wolf was miraculous.

Did she know she was dying when she sang this song?

Just like the lyrics of this song , Kate was a flower fading ,not to come again. How sad it makes me to watch her face , sad and resigned , knowing that she was so sick and probably not coming back . She was ( and still is ) a beautiful , soft , sensitive artist who blessed us with her delightful music and charming presence . We miss you , Kate . Thanks for your gifts . George Lewis, Sr.
