Tomorrow Is My Turn
Nina Simone Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Though some may reach for the stars
Others will end behind bars
What the future has in store no one ever knows before
Yet we would all like the right to find the key to success
That elusive ray of light that will lead to happiness

Tomorrow is my turn
No more doubts no more fears
Tomorrow is my turn
When my luck is returning
All these years I'm been learning to save fingers from burning
Tomorrow is my turn
No more doubts no more fears
Tomorrow is my turn to receive without giving
Make life worth living
Now it's my life I'm living
My only concern for tomorrow is my turn

Now the summer is gone, there's another to come
You can't stop years from drifting by even if you want to try
Though time may help you forget all that has happened before
But honey it's too late to regret what is gone will be no more

Tomorrow is my turn
When my luck is returning
All these years I'm been learning to save fingers from burning
Tomorrow is my turn
No more doubts no more fears
Tomorrow is my turn to receive without giving
Make life worth living

Now it's my life I'm living
My only concern for tomorrow is my turn

Overall Meaning

Nina Simone's "Tomorrow Is My Turn" is a song about the uncertainty of the future and the hope for a better tomorrow. Throughout the song, Simone acknowledges that some people may have more obstacles to overcome than others, whether it be reaching for the stars or ending up behind bars. However, she believes that everyone deserves the right to find their own success and happiness. The lyrics capture the desire to move past doubt and fear and to embrace the opportunities that the future may bring. Simone sings about the passage of time and how it cannot be stopped, but rather used as a tool for learning and growth. The song ultimately celebrates the idea that tomorrow can be a new beginning, a chance for luck to return and for life to be worth living.

One of the interesting facts about the song is that it was written by Charles Aznavour, a French singer and songwriter, and first recorded in French under the title "L'Amour c'est comme un jour" ("Love is Like a Day"). The English version was later recorded by a number of other artists, including Liza Minelli and Shirley Bassey, but it was Simone's rendition that became the most well-known. Another notable fact about the song is that it was included in Simone's 1965 album "I Put a Spell on You," which was one of her most successful and well-received albums.

Genius!!! She's absolutely amazing... Very few people in musical history, can actually do what she's doing... She's just casually playing around with complex musical timing and signature, and also while doing so, as if it's just an amusing toy for her.... Brilliant!!!

Other artists try to fit the music, Nina makes the music fit around her and the story she tells. She's flexible and the bands that played with her had to follow suit

No one interprets a song with such depth and heartache as Nina. She is irreplaceable, and never forgotten.

I loved this tune in '65 on the "I put a spell on you" album, perhaps my fav Nina album. But this "unplugged" version, which I just discovered today, blows me away. Miss Simone just goes so deeply into the moment that it tears the emotions. I was fortunate to see her several times in that era, and this performance so well captures her profound talents.
