If I Were An Angel
Nina Storey Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Feel the tempest of my fear.
You take the path of least resistance.
(I) fall into another year.
You kiss the calm away completely.
While you walk the edge of fool.
But you so unravel all my senses.
Because I can see that it may not work.
You may be a catch, you may be a jerk.
Because you're no hero and I'm no star,
so until we figure just who we are, who we are...
I ask if I was an angel that lit up the sky,
If I was the reason you slept through the night,
Would you promise tomorrow at the end of today?
If I was your angel,
Anyway...
Do I dare to trust my instincts?
I hear your breathing in my sigh.
But these threads I wear,
well they almost complete me.
But I could always change my mind.
Cause I figure if it don't work out,
we can laugh and claim it was all in doubt.
You were on the rocks,
I was on a curve.
It was worth a shot,
but we lost our nerve.
We lost our nerve...
I ask if I was an angel that lit up the sky,
If I was the reason you slept through the night,
Would you promise tomorrow at the end of today?
If I was your angel,
If I was your,
If I was your,
Angel
I was the reason that you,
Slept through the night,
Would you promise me tomorrow,
At the end of today,
If I was your angel
If I
Was Your
Angel (repeat chorus)
Would you promise me tomorrow
And if I was the reason
That you slept at the day
If I was your angel,
If I,
If I was your angel....
The song "If I Were An Angel" by Nina Storey is a poetic exploration of the tensions of falling in love. The first verse sets up the struggle that the singer is facing - they can feel their conscience pounding and their fear surging, while their partner takes the easy path in life. This creates a sense of unease and uncertainty, as the singer is unsure if they're doing the right thing by staying in the relationship another year.
The second verse sees the singer acknowledging their partner's flaws while trying to maintain a detached cool. They can see that the relationship might not work out due to incompatibility, that their partner may be a jerk or not live up to their expectations of a hero. It's here that the chorus starts to emerge, as the singer plays with the idea of whether their partner would stick around if they were an angel that helped them sleep through the night. The bridge is a reflection on the insecurity that comes with falling in love; the singer isn't sure whether to trust their instincts or to stick with their current path. The final verse sees them hoping that they can take a chance on the relationship, but recognizing that there's a chance they might lose their nerve.
Overall, the song is a gorgeous reflection on the vulnerability and beauty of falling in love. It highlights how easy it is to fall into a pattern of fear and doubt, but also how rewarding it can be to take a chance on someone you care for.
