From their inception in late 2003, the band's energetic live performances earned them a hardcore fanbase after playing for only a few months on the Manchester music scene. In 2004 the band were signed to Island records and spent the year touring the UK and recording their first studio album with producer Rob Schnapf in Los Angeles. In 2005 Nine Black Alps toured the UK extensively, promoting the release of their debut album, Everything Is on 13th June 2005. Their first U.S. single was Cosmopolitan; their album Everything Is was released in America on February 28, 2006.
The band's second album, again recorded in LA with producer Dave Sardy Love/Hate, was released on 29 October 2007 and heralded a split with Island Records shortly thereafter. However, Nine Black Alps went on to self-finance and record their third full-length album with producer Dave Eringa, entitled 'Locked Out from the Inside'. Only available as a download from the band's own website - http://www.nineblackalps.com, the album was a return to the louder, heavier sounds of the first record.
Nine Black Alps, after a hiatus of almost 2 years, have been back in the studio as a 3-piece recording tracks for a fourth album, with a possible release in 2012.
What You Wanted
Nine Black Alps Lyrics

Send me down another hit
If that's what you wanted
But I can't take it more or less
Baby I will do my best
If that's what you wanted me for
Hit me hard so I, can see the stars and then
Come a little closer so I can see who you are
But that's not what you wanted so far
I'll smash the windows, break the walls
Even barricade the doors
If that's what you wanted,
Cause I can always make it fit
As long as you're me counterfeit
If that's what you wanted me for
Hit me hard so I, can see the stars and then
Come a little closer so I can see who you are
And we're fighting faster if we stayed in the dark
But that's not what you wanted so far
Sleep it in, let the days pass us by
In a dream I was turning out the light
Ever sinking in the shadow of the night
But that's not what we wanted to find
Hit me hard so I, can see the stars and then
Come a little closer so I can see who you are
And we're fighting faster if we stayed in the dark
But that's not what you wanted so far.
The lyrics to Nine Black Alps's song What You Wanted appear to be about someone trying to please another person who is demanding and possibly manipulative. The first verse talks about the singer being asked to do a "trick" and take another hit, possibly referencing drugs, but they cannot keep up with the demands. The chorus mentions being hit hard so they can see the stars and fighting faster if they stay in the dark, possibly alluding to physical conflict, but this is not what the other person wants. The second verse suggests that the singer is willing to do destructive things like smashing windows and barricading doors, as long as they can fit the other person's counterfeit expectations. The bridge talks about letting days pass and sinking into the shadow of the night, possibly indicating a sense of hopelessness or resignation. Overall, the song seems to be about someone struggling to meet someone else's expectations and feeling trapped in the situation.
