1. Classic female-fronted minimal wave, Netherlands based band Nine Circles released only one album; their self-titled disc was released in 1996 but is comprised of tracks recorded in 1982. Though the band's material scattered across various compilation appearances, it took 14 years for this collection to surface, and there's little information about this band to be found otherwise. There are two more tracks by Nine Circles kicking around; 'How About the Aims in Life?' and 'Once In a While' respectively. The former dates from a Dutch compilation cassette entitled Colonial Vipers, but not sure about the latter.

Mercy
Nine Circles Lyrics

Who was asking for mercy.
Mercy for things
That happened in the past.
Was not me
Who was dreaming of a future.
I don't know
What then (???)
To the landscape.
Early rise,
I was forsaking.
A hundred money bills,
I pay them all.
No profit for me,
But profit for them all.
Mercy
I have no protection...
No protection...
No protection...
Mercy...
...but now I laugh about it.
Mercy.
Was not me
Who was asking for mercy.
Mercy for things
That happened in the past.
Was not me
Who was dreaming of a future.
I don't know what then want.
A band full of closers
Was my pillow.
Building old house
Was all I saw.
I have no protection
But now I laugh when I think about it.
Mercy.
I have no protection.
No protection.
But now I laugh about it.
Mercy
Now I laugh when I think about it
And now I laugh when I think about it
And now I laugh...
Mercy
Mercy
Mercy
Have mercy on me.
The lyrics of Nine Circles's song "Mercy" seem to explore themes of regret, forgiveness, and acceptance. The singer of the song asserts that they were not the one asking for mercy for things that happened in the past or dreaming of a future. Instead, they seem to be reflecting on their own actions and choices in life, acknowledging that they have no protection and paying the price for all their mistakes.
The singer mentions waking up early and forsaking something, possibly a personal goal or dream, for the sake of paying off debts. They acknowledge that they are making no profit for themselves, but rather for others. The repeated refrain of "mercy" further emphasizes the singer's vulnerability and need for forgiveness.
The line "A band full of closers was my pillow" is intriguing and potentially symbolizes the singer's reliance on the people around them for comfort and support. Similarly, the line "building old house was all I saw" could represent a sense of being trapped in their circumstances or feeling like life is stagnant.
