Pentecost Hotel
Nirvana Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There underneath blue waves
The sunrise spreads blue rays
And Pentecost Hotel sheds all its cobwebs
Explosion of the stars
Upon the sea in red
And all the guests had seen the water fireworks

And in the lobby Magdalena is friendly
To all the people with a passport of insanity
And seven sirens are a-dancing to music
In Pentecost Hotel

Strange viaduct of beams
Take me to all your dreams
And leave me there as master of the ocean
There underneath blue waves

The sunrise spreads blue rays
And Pentecost Hotel sheds all its cobwebs

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Nirvana's "Pentecost Hotel" showcase vivid imagery of a hotel situated near the ocean, with beautiful sunrises and sea fireworks adding a surreal element to the scene. Despite being situated at an idyllic location, the hotel appears to be abandoned, with cobwebs adorning its interiors. The beautiful sunrise and the sea fireworks seem to be a representation of the natural beauty that surrounds the hotel, which is juxtaposed with the eerie and abandoned interior of the hotel.

Magdalena, the hotel's receptionist, is described as being friendly to those with a "passport of insanity", hinting at the possibility that the hotel is a retreat for people with mental illnesses. The "seven sirens" dancing to music in the hotel adds a mystical and supernatural element to the song. The "strange viaduct of beams" further adds to the surreal nature of the song, emphasizing the sense of disorientation that seems to be prevalent in the lyrics.

Overall, "Pentecost Hotel" seems to be a commentary on the dichotomy between the natural beauty that surrounds us and the often-mysterious and sinister realm of the human psyche. The hotel, which serves as a metaphor for the mind, is shown to be a place of confusion and disorientation, but it is also visited by mystical and supernatural entities, hinting that there may be more to the human mind than what meets the eye.

Why is this song not more popular? I'm really into 60s music but I've "discovered" this gem just recently! Ithink, this stands up to the best work of the kinks, the hollies, the moody blues or procul harum!

@steandlinda

they inspired PeteTownshend, so they well regarded.

@soulagent79

60's Nirvana are basically the piano player and the guitarist. They did some amazing stuff in the late 60's and are still performing today.

@romelovesdan

Yes, but George Alex Spyropoulos is NOT present in this TV appearance. Strange.
