Breakdown
No Curfew Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Daddy didn't lock it so you found your favourite toy
You got power burning in your hand you naughty little boy
So then something deep
inside you doesn't know that it's for real
You wanna lite up the show so now we know the way you feel
You breakdown
Breakdown
Who will save you
When we only wanna blame you
We're gonna breakdown
We're gonna break
Trenchcoat invades the day and blows us all away
Immitation all around you wanna play the game
So then you break down the walls around the demons in your head
And then you let 'em run around the world and swallow you instead
Breakdown
Breakdown
Who will save you
When we only wanna blame you
Cause you take what's all around you
And then we wonder why
Why you are the way you are just take a look around
We're gonna breakdown
Who will save you
When we only wanna blame you
Cause you take what's all around you
And then we wonder why
Why you are the way you are just take a
look around
We're gonna breakdown
We're gonna break

We're gona breakdown
We're gonna break

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to No Curfew's song "Breakdown" provide an intriguing insight into the psyche of a troubled individual. The opening lines describe how the singer has found their "favourite toy" - a weapon or a means of causing destruction. The sense of power they get from wielding this object is clear, but the lyrics suggest that there is something deeper within the character that drives them to want to "lite up the show" and make a spectacle of themselves.

The chorus of the song laments the absence of anyone who can "save" the character from themselves. The other characters in the song seem to want to blame the singer for their behaviour rather than show empathy or understanding towards them. They're quick to point out the ways in which the character is destructive, but they don't take responsibility for the role society has played in shaping them.

In the second verse, we get an image of the character cloaked in a trenchcoat, perhaps evoking a sense of anonymity or danger. There's also an element of copying others, as the singer wants to "play the game" and replicate the behaviour they've seen around them. But ultimately, it's the "walls around the demons in your head" that are the real problem. The character is struggling with internal demons that are driving them to lash out and wreak havoc in the world.

Overall, "Breakdown" is a poignant commentary on the ways in which society often fails those who are struggling with mental health issues, addiction, or other challenges. It highlights the need for empathy, understanding, and support rather than blame or judgement.

I think the guitar you're thinking of is a Jerry Jones baritone guitar. Check out the track breakdown of "Bilgewater Blues" on youtube.
