The next verse provides several possibilities as to why they can't seem to find fulfillment in their life. They may be holding onto something they should move on from, or they may be unable to articulate what they are feeling. They cannot seem to shake this feeling off, and as they go back and forth with their thoughts, they begin to feel a sense of irreversible pain that will not go away.
The lyrics depict that one's choices and decisions can leave significant or irremediable scars. Even if someone has immense regret or feels sorrowful for their past actions, apologies will not undo or cover up the wounds' damage. They may not even realize that they have been spending their time aimlessly, unable to recognize or accept reality. The chorus emphasizes that the singer may be wasting their time, and despite searching for a solution or trying to make things work, they may not ever find an answer.
