Scratch Your Name
Noisettes Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
In 2025 there'll be fantasy costumes for your psyche
We had a deal we had a sign we had a deal that was broken
I'm not fooling around, fooling around,
Over hills under ground break it open
Scratch your name
Into the fabric
Before you go
The skin will tear
Under the pressure
Make it deep
So it always shows
In a trance petrified to dance
You wait in the wings for your curtain call
On your marks come on, get set go People defend your sovereignty
We had a deal, you were divine We had a deal that was no
King I'm not fooling around,
Mr merry go round Or convulse on the floor like a rabid
Scratch your name
As true as love is insane
Scratch your name
Into the fabric
Of this world
Before you go
The skin will tear
Under the pressure
Make it deep
So it always shows
(X3)
The first verse of Noisettes' "Scratch Your Name" describes a fierce determination burning within the singer. They reference futuristic fantasy costumes, indicating a desire for new and exciting experiences. The singer had a deal that was broken, leaving them restless and ready to break free from their current situation. The phrase "fooling around" is repeated, suggesting a strong urge to take action and make a change. The final line encourages breaking open barriers, finding new opportunities over the hills and underground.
The chorus of "Scratch Your Name" evokes a sense of leaving a lasting impact on the world. The singer urges listeners to "scratch your name into the fabric of this world," creating a mark that will endure even after they are gone. They describe the physical toll of doing so, with skin tearing under pressure, but emphasize the importance of making the mark deep enough to always be visible. The repetition of the chorus emphasizes the importance of this message and the singer's passion for it.
The second verse of the song introduces the idea of being stuck in a trance, waiting for a chance to shine but feeling unable to move. The phrase "curtain call" suggests that this is a theatrical reference, reinforcing the idea of feeling frozen in place. The singer emphasizes the importance of defending one's sovereignty, with the repeated reference to a broken deal indicating that this was something they had experienced personally. The final lines suggest a choice between acting like a king or a desperate, convulsing figure.

The first album has loads of great songs and energy. I bought it from a store in Japan. It had a display decaring that they were the biggest band in the UK when in fact nobody really knew them there. Mind you the kings of leon were also in the 'best of british' section. The second album maybe has one good song at a push.

I only recently discovered Noisettes. Love their music! That's an unusual thing for me to say, because I hate most popular music.
