The Long Way Home
Norah Jones猀 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I stumbled in the darkness
I'm lost and alone
Though I said I'd go before us
And show the way back home
There a light up ahead
I can't hold onto her arm
Forgive me pretty baby
But I always take the long way home

Money's just something you throw
Off the back of a train
Got a handful of lightening
A hat full of rain
And I know that I said
I'd never do it again
And I love you pretty baby
But I always take the long way home

I put food on the table
And roof overhead
But I'd trade it all tomorrow
For The highway instead
Watch your back if I should tell you
Loves the only thing I've ever known
One thing for sure pretty baby
I always take the long way home

You know I love you baby
More than the whole wide world
You are my woman
I know you are my pearl
Let's go out past the party lights
We can finally be alone
Come with me
And we can take the long way home
Come with me,
Together we can take the long way home

Come with me,
Together we can take the long way home

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Norah Jones's song "The Long Way Home" explore the theme of romantic relationships and the different paths taken in love. The opening lines of the song, "Well I stumbled in the darkness / I'm lost and alone / Though I said I'd go before us / And show the way back home," suggest a sense of detachment and disorientation regarding the central relationship. The singer acknowledges her partner's attempts to lead her back towards emotional security and stability, but she cannot seem to find her way. The line "There a light up ahead / I can't hold onto her arm" reinforces this idea of separation and inability to connect.

Jones then introduces the metaphor of a journey by describing the singer as someone who always "takes the long way home." This phrase implies that the character is not afraid to embrace detours and unexpected twists and turns on the road of life. The line "Money's just something you throw / Off the back of a train" suggests a carefree attitude towards material possessions that is contrasted with the weightiness of emotional commitment. The words "Got a handful of lightening / A hat full of rain" convey a sense of exhilaration and vulnerability that goes hand in hand with the unknown journey.

Jones ups the stakes in the chorus with the lyrics "And I love you pretty baby / But I always take the long way home," indicating that the character's love is not in doubt, but the path she takes may not always be smooth sailing. She trades the stability of "food on the table / And roof overhead" for a life full of uncertainty on the open road because "Loves the only thing I've ever known." The line "Watch your back if I should tell you" underscores the unpredictability of love and the possibility of heartbreak.

In the final verse, Jones appeals to her lover's understanding and support as she navigates her emotional landscape. She says "You know I love you baby / More than the whole wide world / You are my woman / I know you are my pearl." The invitation "Come with me / And we can take the long way home" underscores the idea that love is a shared journey, and that even if the path may be circuitous, it's one worth taking together.

Amazing story, videography, and brings me to tears seeing others accomplish hard things. One day maybe for me… but how he explains that there’s something powerful in thinking … “I’m going to run _ miles (or whatever distance it is), and making it happen, putting those two pieces together, is powerful”. That’s the stuff right there! Nothing pulls the heart strings more than seeing each finisher!! ❤

throughout this film, he talks about the empowerment you get from completing something that you originally thought was impossible. i had this experience after running the NYC marathon back in '18.. i had really been screwing up my life, drinking daily, doing drugs like coke and tina regularly, and changing jobs or getting fired every few months throughout my entire 20s before training for it. and i did very little training. the day of the race, i wasn't even sure if i could do it, but i had made it to NYC, and had some family and partner with me and i felt very strongly that i really didn't have a choice but to finish. around mile 23 when i new i was going to make it, i had that profound realization or epiphany i believe he is talking about, where you realize that anything is possible, and you really can do anything you set your mind to. its a very common saying, but it hits differently when you KNOW it to be a fact. it was a moment i desperately needed in my life, after countless failures, arrest, humiliation, etc. the Miami marathon this jan. will be my 6th marathon, and I have been attached to running ever since. i feel very blessed to have had this realization in my life, and hope everyone can experience something like this! if you are reading this and need a win for once in your life, get out side and start training!

The running, the story, amazing, all of it...But what really stuck out to me was the relationship between Eric and his wife!! I've seen so many other runners sort of blow off their partner at aid points, but even when he's hurting so bad he always gives her a hug and a kiss before taking off again. And she is so supportive. Just such a sweet part of this whole film

Jared is hilarious. I'll never forget this little clip of him referring to Eric's "Hamstring Injury"...

Great film, great content.
