The group adopted a more abstract, ambient and synthesiser-based sound than the more instantly-recognisable guitar-pop approach of The Field Mice. Their debut single, "Love Song For The Dead Che", was a cover of a song by 1960s psychedelic group United States of America, and both it and the following album, Alaska, won critical acclaim, however sales were poor, even compared to the Field Mice's records. The group members' personal problems (various members succumbed to depression, stage fright and substance abuse) made touring difficult, and thus also made it difficult for the group to promote their records effectively. Two more EPs followed "Blue Dissolve EP" (12"/CD, Vinyl Japan, released June 1994) and "Paris EP" (CD, released by Sarah Records, September 1994) before the group was dissolved. Wratten later went on to form Trembling Blue Stars, with Davies also joining the group in a later incarnation.
In 2005 the entire Northern Picture Library back catalogue was released on two CDs on the LTM label.
Truly Madly Deeply
Northern Picture Library Lyrics

I've gazed up in wonder at the stars with you
I thank my lucky ones
You're in my life
And make a mess of things from time to time
I've known it seem an age since you last smiled
To be with you I've ached a host of times
The sound of rolling thunder
We have held each other tight
I love you, I love you
Truly, madly, deeply
I love you, I love you
Truly, madly, deeply
Once I made you sad when I mentioned I had
Spent some time the night before reading old letters
Once I apologized
And gave you flowers
That were the color of your eyes
I love you, I love you
Truly, madly, deeply
I love you, I love you
Truly, madly, deeply
(I've seen tears of joy trickle down your cheeks
I've seen you falling in love)
(When I'm apart from you I sometimes cry)
In Northern Picture Library's song "Truly Madly Deeply," the singer expresses their deep love and appreciation for their partner. The lyrics are comprised of two verses and a chorus, and each line seems to be an intimate revelation of the singer's emotional response to their partner's presence. The first verse mentions the women and the child in the singer's partner, which may allude to how the singer sees their partner as complex and multifaceted. The second line describes how they gazed up at the stars together, perhaps highlighting an awe-inspiring moment shared by the two that left the singer feeling grateful. They also mention how they sometimes make a mess of things, acknowledging that love isn't always perfect.
The second verse of the song starts by saying, "I've known it seem an age since you last smiled." It's a melancholic line that could imply that their relationship may have gone through difficult phases, perhaps cycles of distance and tension. However, despite this, the singer has ached to be with their partner again. The third line mentions the sound of rolling thunder, creating a subtle metaphor for love's intense but fleeting moments. The fourth line highlights how they have held each other tight during those times. The chorus repeats twice throughout the song, and it is a declaration of love, with the words "Truly, madly, deeply" being emphasized with a slight repetition.
Overall, the song is a tender love song with genuine lyrics that feel both intimate and honest. It highlights the nuances of relationships, acknowledging that love can be messy and that tough times may come, but ultimately, love prevails.
