Daybreak
Northstar Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A censored write up on love in yesterday's paper
Left me feeling lonely
As rotten paper falls from my notebook
I had to bring myself to pick up my jaw

You can't stop daybreak, daybreak

Well In the back of my mind she sits
With her arms around his chest
If I had four hands
I could hold you like you wanted
And I'd give you my soul
To see that it's been sold
That it's been sold
That it's been sold
That it's been sold

You can't stop daybreak
With your voice inside
Scribbled on an empty sidewalk through his life
Flipping page by page
Looking up so far down

You can't stop daybreak, daybreak

Disappointed

From her looks of despair

Overall Meaning

lyrically complex song, it is clear that Northstar is exploring the theme of unrequited love as well as the feeling of loneliness and disappointment that comes with it. The opening lines about a censored write-up on love in yesterday's paper sets the tone for the song, where the singer is feeling lonely and disconnected from the world around him. The image of rotten paper falling from his notebook is symbolic of his own feelings and emotions decaying and falling apart. The phrase "I had to bring myself to pick up my jaw" also indicates shock or surprise, perhaps at the realization that his love is unrequited.

The second verse is particularly poignant, as the singer admits to having his love interest on his mind. He imagines her with her arms around another man and yearns to be able to hold her himself. The line "I'd give you my soul to see that it's been sold" is particularly striking, as it conveys the idea that the singer is willing to sacrifice everything to be with this person, even if she is not interested in him romantically. The repeated phrase "You can't stop daybreak" serves as a reminder that time marches inexorably forward, regardless of our feelings or desires.

Overall, Daybreak is a powerful exploration of the themes of unrequited love, loneliness, and disappointment, conveyed through complex and evocative lyrics.

I remember reading "Northstar is the best band ever!" in the booklet for "Tell All Your Friends" by Taking Back Sunday. I immediately went to my nearest record store to by this Northstar album, and Daybreak easily became my new favorite song. Northstar is still unmatched in terms of rock music to this day.
